Jessica Simpson, A Texas Girl To Be Proud Of.
Jessica Simpson turned down the opportunity to meet the Village Idiot at a Republican fundraiser! Said she would love to meet him and discuss the charity that she is lobbying for but NOT at a Repuke fundraiser. They were SHOCKED...SHOCKED I tell you, because the opportunity to meet the Idiot, or SIT at the head table with Boehner didn't LURE her into their web of spite. Seems to me that THEY should've been fighting over which of THEM would get to sit with HER!! They really wanted to politicize this Texas treasure. The article says she keeps her politics personal. GOOD FOR HER!

1. She's come a long way - Lachey must have influenced her.... or Willie
Nelson. ;)

Seriously, Nick Lachey is politically savvy, a Democrat, and plans to seek office when he's older.

40. Pretty sure I heard he wants to run for mayor of Cincinnati as a Dem.
Jessica was Republican back then, so I imagine if he was at the R convention it wouldn't be strange, since lots of media folks turn up at both conventions.

3. This 'Texas Treasure' is a rabid Republican and Bush supporter.
Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 01:42 PM by bowens43
Her refusal to participate in the fundraiser was not an indication that she disagreed with bush or his policies. It was because she didn't want to alienate half of the country when it comes to her favorite charity.

It's embarrassing for bush and that's good but it hardly qualifies her as a 'treasure'.

6. Why do we pay attention
to these air headed movie stars and music performers. Just because they have pretty faces, can memorize lines, and sing on tune does not make them savy to what the real world is.

14. Some people pay attention to these folks....
Who don't care about the artists we like. And they may not be news nerds, either. So, a few people might wake up.

I'm sure those on the right use your argument to dismiss George Clooney's opinions.

31. Except
you need to remember that some performers are extremely bright.

To get through an MFA program is not a cakewalk. As Billy Crystal's uncle said, " To be an actor, you have to know EVERYTHING!"

Guess what, it's true. If one is an actor - Not a celebrity - then one indeed has to , "know everything". To give a valid, true performance, one has to be aware of all aspects of the human condition.

So by saying, "These people, whether right or left, simply do not matter." you are invalidating the contributions of Clifford Odets, Woody Guthrie, Gordon Parks, et al? You would say that Picasso's 'Guernica' was only a painting?

So, who is authorised to speak?

Whose voice has weight?

There are fewer and fewer people willing to take a public stance. Artists have a platform, and they are citizens like the rest of us. If they do not use their chance to speak to the issues of the day and be heard, who will? Letters to the editor are all very well, but who reads them?

- - It's late. I've had at least a bottle of wine. I'm depressed by the infighting on DU. I'm depressed by the lack of cohesion within the Democratic Party. And what has happened to my country? Why are the bastards winning again and again and again? I vote. I call, write, email, fax my Congressional representatives and it does no damn good. I'd like nothing more than to wake up tomorrow and find that the last 6 years were a nightmare. I'd take a shower, shave and go outside and find that it is indeed spring.

However, I know that it's going to be the same crappy mess that was there when I went to bed. The same gang of crooks in Congress, the same miscreants at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and the same enablers of corporate malfesasance on K Street.

Good night and good luck.

Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 02:15 PM by sparosnare
Because she thought of her own skin first? She hardly said no because her political beliefs are progressive. She said no because she didn't want to associate with a loser; would be bad for her career.

Edited on Thu Mar-16-06 08:23 PM by npincus
I am hardly a Jessica Simpson fan, but she showed common decency here. The charity she was promotoing provides surgery for kids born with cleft palates and facial deformities. I wouldn't knock her on this.

She had dinner at Bill Richardson's (governor's) mansion a few months agao, but that was not a fundraiser, and she wasn't repping the charity- it was "social".

7. Well, we don't know her motives for refusing, but she has been+
a * supporter in the past - but that might have been typical knee-jerk "I'm a patriotic American so of course I support the President" kind of thing.

Maybe she's starting to grow up. Maybe she's seen the red-tape and general unconcern the Republicans have for her charity work, making her re-think her unthinking allegiance.

Or maybe she simply doesn't want her charity work politicized.

Whatever the case, good on her.

sounds more like something suggested to her by her publicist, to keep from alienating anyone. Sounds like a pure money making decision, a savy one, but still a decision based on cash not conviction.

28. it's not really something to be proud of
to make it something to be proud of she would actually have to speak out against him rather than some general statement about conflict of interest or whatever else.

i am glad she isn't supporting him as it appeared when he first came into office. even then i don't think it was as much about her supporting him than about just supporting the President of the United States whether it was Bush or Gore.

<SNIP>Joe Simpson, manager/father of Jessica Simpson, wants everyone to know that although his daughter declined to attend a big GOP fundraiser while she was in D.C. on Thursday, she's still a Bush supporter: "We are huge fans of him and of his family, his girls. Jessica loves the heck out of him."

http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/2006-03-17/
<SNIP>Jessica Simpson has fired back at press reports she snubbed a meeting with President George W. Bush, insisting he ran out of time to sit down with her. Simpson insists she is not among the celebrities who are keen to attack the US President - and she's still hoping the pair can reschedule their meeting. Simpson was set to meet the leader Friday, during the pop star's visit to Capitol Hill in Washington DC, where she'll address congressmen about charity organization Operation Smile. She says, "I'm just so excited because the President asked for a special meeting. We're going to sit down face to face and we're going to talk about children. I want to set up this whole orphanage and adoption organization. I just really want to bring awareness to interracial adoption." The pop star, who performed at Bush's inauguration and has been to The White House four times, admits she's a big fan of Bush: "He's a very personable guy, he's a Texas guy. His ranch is four doors down from my aunt and uncle's ranch. We have lots of Texas stuff to talk about."

Jessica disses Dubya, but is a 'huge fan'

Jessica Simpson loves President Bush.
She's just not a big fan of Republican fundraisers, reports The Associated Press.

The Hollywood starlet and tabloid cover girl was on Capitol Hill Thursday to lobby
Congress for Operation Smile, an organization that provides reconstructive surgery
to children with facial deformities. But all anyone wanted to know was why she turned
down an invitation to attend a Republican fundraiser with Washington's top star -- Bush.

''We went back and forth, and we could never get the details worked out,'' said her father
and manager, Joe Simpson. ``When it became obvious that it was not just a state dinner,
it was more of a fundraising event, that is the wrong purpose of why we are here.''

Still, he said of the president,
``We are huge fans of him and of his family, his girls. Jessica loves the heck out of him.''
