Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, however, nicely blends many of these qualities and brings an attribute unique to his own candidacy - an informed freshness that comes with having spent some, but not too much, time in public life. For this reason, we urge Maine Democrats to give their support to Edwards in their caucuses on Feb. 8.
A HOLLYWOOD script writer couldn't come up with a more compelling personal story than Edwards'. He was born in Seneca, South Carolina, and raised in Robbins, North Carolina. He was first person in his family to attend college. He went to public schools, attended a public university and got a law degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1977.
He made a fortune as a trial attorney, and in his mid-40s turned to politics. In 1998 he won election to the U.S. Senate.
There he has steered a moderate course and has won admiration for his thoughtful views on national defense and security. He sits on the Select Committee on Intelligence.
