14. When the book was written it was Sci-Fi, but NOT anymore!
Edited on Sat Mar-18-06 01:51 AM by radio4progressives
most of the "sci-fi" stuff is today's technology and reality.. (unfortunately)

the only "sci-fi" stuff really is the combat, and a few other things i don't want to mention cuz it'll ruin it for ya...

but it's not like heavy sci-fi- it's mix of reality and fantasy, about equal portions. you have to suspend belief on a few things, but you know, it's freaking movie!

and an EXCELLENT one too i might add.

brought me to tears. Bush supporters won't get it, they'll be bored because they don't have any interest in culture or history, and don't have a problem with torture, or anti-gay bigotry, or a police state, or lies, or a theocracy, or mass murder, or concentration camps.

There were some interesting ways that the film deviated from the graphic novel... in the book, V deals with Prothero differently (and makes the Limbaugh parallel even funnier)

Everythings in there. From The Count of Monte Cristo to Phantom of The Opera, from Iraq to fear of deadly virus's, from Orwells big brother 1984 to the decline of the American Empire. The film rocks! This film is probably gonna shake more people up than the Da Vinchi Code. It holds no punches and compels one to ask wheather we are obidient to the government or visa versa.

The second time around I'm sure there's so much more one can pick up that they didn't catch on the first viewing! Hopefully this film will stir up a lot of minds around the world. The amazing thing is that it was written back in the 80's during Thatcherism.

23. Why is that amazing?
The Bush administration is not special. It's not a "oh my god, how did they know!!!!!!" moment. This is what governments/corporations/kingdoms/whatever have been doing since they were created. It's a concentration of power. That is why those entities exist.

How could Orwell and Huxley have known?!?!?!?!?!?! They paid attention to how power works. Same with V for Vendetta.

The only thing this movie might say is that the problem is far bigger than the Bush administration, and goes far deeper into the past than just the last 5 years.

26. This movie poses no threat
Not that as soon as seeing Brokeback, all the children in the land would turn gay. But that can be exploited. There is a gay segment of the population.

I haven't seen V, but I will. From what I gather, it has revolutionary overtones. There is no threat of that, violent or otherwise. People will see the movie, may talk about it, but we'll all go back to our cubicles on Monday.

28. I can't tell you how impressed I was
I actually saw it with a "fundie" friend of mine who was a big big fan of The Matrix, so naturally he wanted to see the next Wachowski film. Vendetta got off to a rough start because of bad focus problems, and we eventually had to change theaters. But the film impressed me immensely, I can't even begin to explain. Towards the end, when the narrative went to the escalation of wars, the rise of a dictatorship and the start of persecution, my eyes were watering. A couple people walked out of the theater. Americans need to see this film. Go see it.

As for my fundie friend, he said the movie was "good, but weird". He was pretty quiet and looked extremely thoughtful on the drive home...

31. Just Saw It!!!
Wife and I went to the Sunday Matinee. Good number of people there, and some of them were pretty vocal. When V says "The People shouldn't be afraid of the government. The government should be afraid of the people," there was some hooting and hollering and some uncomfortable laughter too. On the whole it seemed a good part of he audience was getting it.

Loved the ending - especially the soundtrack with the Stones' "Fighting in the Streets". That was a kick. This is a powerful movie with first rate acting start to finish. Lots of subtle touches and references - and Natalie Portman - well ok, she's just stunning.

five stars! ***** I hope this film makes a killing and helps wake Amerika up.

Ideas are bulletproof! They cannot die!

(For Sci-Fi fans: I love the irony that there was an eighties mini-series named "V" that was about the take-over of earth by fascist reptilian overlords. It's like bizarre matching bookends. But then - there are no coincidences, right???)

36. I have two questions about the movie (spoilers)
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 09:39 PM by Ignacio Upton
1. Why did V allow for Natalee Portman's character to be tortured and left in that cell? How was he complicit in this?

2. What happens in the U.S. in the movie? They keep referring to America as the "former United States," where another Civil War is occuring (in reference to the first Civil War.)

I thought it was a decent movie, although I wish that it wasn't as dated in vis a vis political references to America in 2006. I think that the movie could easily apply to future heads of state as much as it could to Bush (or, in the case of the author's intent of the original comic book, Margaret Thatcher.) I did like how they poked fun of O'Reilly (or was it Rush?) with that media blowhard/conductor of genocide.

2. Nuclear war -- left US as a "leper colony" to quote the film

40. But how did he get her while the government get her friend?
The guy who did the show making fun of Chancellor Sutler got his face smashed in and taken away and executed, while V somewhat copies them by getting Evey? Also, how could he have done the whole torture routine by himself? I mean, shave her head, drag her back to her cell, etc. Or did V just wear masks to impersonate each prison "official," the way he did what that dead party official (Rockwood was the guy's name.)

41. I can't help with the actual details, because the novel has ...
a different scenario that is more explainable (although it's still a real stretch to imagine V playing all those parts).

In the film, it certainly looked like he had help didn't it? Then, even that isn't unreasonable, he was able to get alot of things done wasn't he?

39. This sounds like a difference between the comic and the movie (spoiler?)
This post contains spoilers for the graphic novel, if you're literary minded and want to go out and read a truly great book (one of the very few "graphic novels" that I rank up there with other classic literature from the tentieth century).

In the comic, it is quite clear that it is V himself who has locked Evie in the cell and tortured her, in order to prove her loyalty, and to bring her around to his way of thinking through the use of a prison letter written on toilet paper -- the same letter that got him through his concentration camp days, and opened his eyes.

Did they have the cop drop acid at the ruins of V's concentration camp? I seriously doubt they'll leave that in, but don't tell me either way -- I'm going to see it tomorrow!

"Vendetta" Bloodies Box Office

by Bridget Byrne
Mar 19, 2006, 4:15 PM PT

V for Vendetta...and victory.

The Wachowski brothers' adaptation of Alan Moore and David Lloyd's classic graphic novel about rebellion against a fascist regime pulled in an estimated $26.1 million to handily win the weekend box office.

saw the movie tonight...Maybe It's just me but I thought the
movie was crap. First, its creepy (and not in a good way) to have
the hero sashaying around in a carnival mask. Second, all
the government stuff is too heavy handed. I mean, c'mon...
when a movie government looks worse than Hitler are we
supposed to imagine that's real? Stupid. Just stupid.

45. It's a stylistic genre piece
Think "comic book"! Think Zorro, The Scarlet Pimpernel, even Robocop! If you're expecting a serious treatment of totalitarian politics - you will be disappointed. No doubt. Movies like this are always done in bold broad strokes with dramatic contrasts and juxtapositions. It's just entertainment with an important theme. Relax and enjoy the ride.
