‘Impeach Bush’ chorus grows (UK)
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2089-2092455,00.html

The Sunday Times March 19, 2006
Sarah Baxter, Washington

THE movement to impeach President George W Bush over the war on terror began with a few tatty bumper stickers on the back of battered old Volvos and slogans such as “Bush lied, people died” on far-left websites. But as Democrat hopes rise of gaining control of Congress this autumn, dreams of impeaching Bush are no longer confined to the political fringe.

A poll last week found that voters, by 50% to 37%, would prefer the Democrats to win control of Congress. If Bush’s opponents find themselves in a position of power, the temptation to humiliate him is likely to be irresistible.

A taste of the battle to come was provided last week by Senator Russ Feingold, a popular choice for the 2008 presidential nomination among Democrat anti-war activists. He proposed a motion of censure against Bush for authorising the National Security Agency to wiretap Americans suspected of links to terrorism without a court warrant.

Feingold gave notice that the party should stop “cowering” before Bush on national security issues. “If there’s any Democrat out there who can’t say the president has no right to make up his own laws, I don’t know if that Democrat really is the right (presidential) candidate,” he said.

Plenty of his Senate colleagues ducked for cover, fearful of alienating either party activists or swing voters. The eavesdropping issue is one of the few hot-button topics where Bush has public support. One leading supporter of Hillary Clinton acknowledged ruefully: “It’s hard to beat the argument, ‘If Al-Qaeda is on the line, we want to be listening’.”

1. The only way I can think of that is legal.

Regretfully, the UK can't impeach him and Congress won't. My suggestion is below. I've been trying to get this posted on as many websites and blogs as possible. It is an old idea and a simple one, but right now it is the only one that I think might work in what is still for the time being 'a nation of laws'.
Please consider this seriously. I may be our last chance.

Subject: The only way I can think of that is legal

I'm 61 years old and have been active in progressive politics since my
teens.  I've marched for
civil rights and against war. I vote and volunteer in almost every
election. I write and call my
Senators and Congressmen. I've published a newspaper and books. I've
served in the military
and paid my taxes and nothing seems to help.

Now my beloved America is in the hands of facists. And doing what I've
been doing all these years
isn't going to change that, so there is only one option left.  I'm not
going to work on Maggies Farm anymore.
I'm asking everybody in America that is sick of how things are going, sick
of watching our kids die in
an illegal war, sick of watching our environment being sold to the highest
bidder and raped, sick of not
having our votes counted, sick of watching right-wing zealots take a
woman's right to controll her own
body away, sick of watching the Constitution being ripped to shreads, sick
of how long this list would
have to be to cover all of the things that we are sick and tired of seeing
happen to our country, to join me
in calling in sick on Flag Day June 14th 2006.

I don't want essential workers like doctors or firemen or cops to stay
home. And I don't want anyone to
risk losing their job, but I think if several million people just didn't
show up for work on that Wednesday
morning a lot of stuff would grind to a halt.  Thursday we all go back to
work and bust our butts catching up
but we will have let them know who really runs this country.  This would
have been a fool's errand even a
few years ago, but now with the internet and the blogs I think it can be
done.  I'm sick of not having my
voice heard in the corridors of power so I plan to just shut up and stay
home reading the Constitution.

If they are so all powerful let them mop the floors, cook the food, stock
the shelves, harvest the crops,
drive the cab.  We have the  power and all we have to do to show it is
just stay home for one day.
June 14th will leave enough time before the election for the effect of
this to sink in and scare the shit out
of the bastards. It will also give us time to inspire the people and show
them how democracy is supposed
to work.  Maybe they will even vote.  Maybe we can take our country back.
All we can do is try.

Will you ask your readers to join me on Flag Day and stay home?
Hell, America could use a day off.

Peace!

billy

2. This proves how successful mediaspin is - the story was spun AGAINST Dems
Edited on Sun Mar-19-06 01:16 PM by blm
completely bypassing the FACT that Feingold WANTED and GOT the censure debate in committee and provides judiciary Dems like Kennedy and Leahy the basis to request more WH documents on NSA spying, and it is the GOPs who want senators to make quick declarations of their position so no further examination occurs.

We have known this since TUESDAY. Yet it appears many DUers are siding with Cheney and Frist and are demanding declarations NOW instead of using the opportunity of censure debate in committee to further examine WH documents and culpability in the PUBLIC ARENA.

The article also ignores the fact that Feingold, since offering his resolution, has made a tactical decision to SELL censure as an ALTERNATIVE to the legal remedy of impeachment.

He stated that impeachment is bad for the country at a time of war and his approach is a moderate one, since it is nonbinding in any legal way that holds the president accountable.
