I know that we're focused on 2006 at this point, but we can at least talk about 2008 a little. The point of this thread is to emphasize how it is closer than you would think. Wasn't it only two years ago that Kerry all but wrapped up the nomination and the netroots was ablaze between supporters of Dean, Clark, Kerry, and Edwards, and Kucinich? I remember talking to fellow Democrats who each supported different candidates and read posts on various blogs attacking other candidates (ie. Dean is nuts, Clark was a Republican, Kerry is a flip flopper, etc.) The level of vitriol should not be seen as surprising, as a degree of it happens in just about every primary. However, I think that 2004 was an obvious increase in this intra-party strife, as opposed to 2000 when the only two candidates running were Al Gore and Bill Bradley (I don't remember that primary as well, so my opinion of the time may be a little more biased towards the idea that it was relatively clean.) In just nine months from now, we will see the first of the 2008 candidates announce that they will run for POTUS. In a year from now, we will see sites like DU, Daily Kos, MyDD, and TPMCafe filled with posts bashing other candidates. The primary flame wars of 2003-2004 will return with a vengence, especially if Hillary is in the race. The one thing that will make next year's round of flamewars more tolarable than the previous ones will be the fact that the GOP will also deal with flamewars. Allen, Frist, Romney, and McCain people will be torturing each other on sites like Free Republic and Red State, something that we couldn't look forward to watching in 2004 when Bush was all but the nomination guaranteed,.
