Port deal collapse may hurt, not help, security

By Michael Christie
FT. LAUDERDALE, Florida (Reuters) - The debacle over a Dubai company's thwarted attempt to take over some U.S. port operations may end up undermining U.S. security because of its impact on counter-terrorism cooperation with Arab states, maritime experts said on Tuesday

The experts said the furor that led to state-owned Dubai Ports World promising to sell its interest in six U.S. ports it would acquire by buying the global assets of Britain's P&O had been driven by politics, ignorance and bigotry, and not by honest security concerns.

"For four years we have been trying to tell the Arabs that we are not anti-Arab, we are anti-fundamentalist," said Bernard Kerik, the former New York Police Department commissioner who oversaw rescue efforts after the September 11 attacks.

Kerik, who was nominated for homeland security secretary in 2004 but withdrew amid questions about the immigration status of his housekeeper and nanny, said Arab countries were as much a target of al Qaeda as was the United States, and should be embraced as allies, not turned into foes.

7. And democracy is only important when WE say it is!!!!
The UAE is run by seven royal despots, but that's just fine. Pakistan is run by a military dictator, and that is just swell. But Iraq....those folks WILL BE FREEDOM-LUVVIN' PEOPLES or DIE TRYING!!!!!!!

8. They should have thought about that when for the last 5-6 years
they have been spouting Anti-Arab comments, allowing the religious right to scream Anti-Arab sentiment and not checking them...

11. the ports deal was about the dollar vs. the euro
and now Saudis and the UAE are threatening to change
from dollars to euros, which would threaten our current
economy that doesn't have the gold to back up the
dollars. Wonder if Bush Inc. will now put them on
the enemies list?

12. Bernard Kerik: Corrupt cop or Man of Peace?
I vote for the former. Giuliani Partners must be on the DPW payroll.
