Quick Question: Weren't we a "Nation at War" when Clinton was Impeached???

Memory is a bit fuzzy, but seems like we were in the middle of a war in Bosnia and Kosovo, not to mention bombing the hell out of Iraq at the time the Repukes were calling for Clinton's impeachment and resignation and imprisonment and execution and the rest of it.

Was all that just a bad dream?

If you count the cold war that would be a no right there.

But we might also want to consider his and Zbig's involvement in training
islamic fundamentalists to fight the Soviet Union in Afghanistan.

Carter has a relatively good record compared to most though. He stopped U.S.
support for the Samoza dictatorship (a big plus in my mind).

My history under Carter years is unfortunately void of any in depth background knowledge - i simply wasn't paying attention to much except for the Camp David Peace Accords and then of course the Iran hostage situation.. not to mention the terrible bashing he got for the "double digit" inflation and high unemloyment numbers which i think was a result of the cost of the Viet Nam wars.

But to his credit, he didn't start the Cold War.. I have recently heard it argued that he had more to do with "ending" the cold war than he's been give credit for. I don't know why i wasn't up on the Afghanistan war, i thought it was Reagan who was backing the Taliban against the Soviet Union?

don't get me wrong.

As well, I think too many people view U.S. history with the idea that every administration starts anew in terms of foreign policy. That is not the case though. There are groups like the CFR and the NSC that are filled with the same people no matter who is president and the, in a large part, determine U.S. foreign policy.

BTW, the Taliban didn't take over until 1996. They won out over all the other warlords who competed for power after the Soviet Union left and Bush Sr. walked away from it all. It was the Muhajadeen that I believe you are referring to. Most of this effort occurred under Reagan but I think it got started at the very end of the Carter administration. It went full scale once Reaganstein took over.

On the matter of the Foreign Policy set by the CFR...

If only more DU'rs were aware of how much of U.S. Foreign Policy is crafted, guided, and driven by this group (working closely with NSA)with every single administration, regardless of which party is in the white house.

Thanks for the reminder on Afghanistan. A lot of imortant history, much of it muddied in the fog of wars, and propaganda..
