Grants flow to Bush allies on social issues
Federal programs direct at least $157 million to conservative groups

By Thomas B. Edsall

Updated: 12:49 a.m. ET March 22, 2006

<<snip>>

Under the auspices of its religion-based initiatives and other federal programs, the administration has funneled at least $157 million in grants to organizations run by political and ideological allies, according to federal grant documents and interviews.

<<snip>>

By 2004, Heritage Community Services had become a major player in the booming business of abstinence education. Its budget passed $3 million --much of it in federal grants distributed by Bush's Department of Health and Human Services -- supporting programs for students in middle school and high school in South Carolina, Georgia and Kentucky.

<<snip>>

Programs such as the Compassion Capital Fund, under the Health and Human Services, are designed to support religion-based social services, a goal that inevitably funnels money to organizations run by people who share Bush's conservative cultural agenda.

<<snip>>

H. James Towey, director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, said politics plays no role in grant-making decisions. "We don't have that kind of calculation," he said.

Most, but not all, of the money going to conservative groups has come from two programs that did not exist before Bush took office in 2001. The Compassion Capital Fund, which distributed $148.3 million from 2002 to 2005, was created "to expand the role that faith-based and community groups play in providing social services to those in need," according to the White House. The Community-Based Abstinence Education grant program was enacted by Congress in 2001, and $391.7 million has been appropriated for it.

1. God help me...
That is the name of my new not-for-profit community service project to help me pay my rent. I attest that I am a worthy cause and invite all and sundry to heal their souls and feel better about themselves in helping me in this faith-based initiative. My (land)lord has faith in my ability to pay the rent next month, and I just really don't want to let him down.

I will accept money from Democrats, but would really appreciate some cash from Republicans who cannot figure out what to do with the giant sacks full of cash that they were sending to Abramoff. I'm just trying to do my part to help keep the faith. Amen.

3. I knew I got into the wrong form of corporate business.
This political Christian Coalition that forme the basis of the Neo-Nazi Christian Fascist National 'Republican' Tory CIA Mafia Conservative 'party' is an unconstitutional abomination. Indeed what can this feeding of Christian proslytizing tax-free socialist cultism be viewed as, other than a direct violation of the Bill of Rights?

Taxpayer financing of these tax free, politically lobbying, Christian socialist cults is nothing less than the establishment of religion.

Right, they don't have data down to what color socks the the CEO wears with his blue Armani suit! When the truth finally comes out as to the scope of how much looting has been done during the Bush regime, I think even us die hard cynics are going to be shocked.

11. The crime family is going to ruin the good name of non-profits
right along with the reputation of churches. What sleaze bags. We haven't even scratched the surface of the really-good-cause non-profit Republican money laundering front. Even Babs is in on it - giving money to her son Neil through a Katrina fund.

16. thanks...
but how the fuck do they get away with this?
Regarding the fact that Bush's earmarked donation also benefited her son's company, Becker said, "Mrs. Bush is obviously an enthusiastic supporter of her son. She is genuinely supportive of his program," and has received many letters from educators who support it. Bush "honestly felt this would be a great way to help the (evacuee) students."
