Gov requests 10 debates with TopinkaMarch 23, 2006

Gov. Blagojevich had promised an “aggressive” general election campaign, and he moved to make good on that today, sending Republican challenger Judy Baar Topinka a letter proposing they square off in 10 debates — starting as early as next month.
“From the beginning of this campaign, I made it clear I was committed to a series of debates in the general election,” Blagojevich wrote to Topinka. “That time has come.”
If the two agree to meet 10 times, it would likely break all modern-day records for the number of gubernatorial debates in the general election season.
The Democratic governor’s five-paragraph signed letter to the Republican state treasurer comes just two days after their primary victories and one day after the two engaged in an impromptu mini-debate of sorts on WGN-TV. They were in separate studios for that eight-minute exchange but appeared on-screen together.

Topinka’s campaign officials did not immediately have a comment.
