WASHINGTON, March 23 (UPI) -- Britain, Poland and the Czech Republic are among finalist nations the U.S. Pentagon is considering as a missile base for its "Star Wars" defense system.
At a military conference in Washington, Lt. Gen. Trey Obering, head of the Missile Defense Agency, said the United States had formally selected Britain as a possible site for the interceptor missile sites in Europe, the Financial Times reported.
Hungary was apparently dropped from consideration, the report said.
However, a Pentagon spokesman said there had so far been "no planning, no approach, no request, and no invitation" to any of the European candidates.
The European site would be the "third site" for interceptors after Fort Greely in Alaska and Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

SURGUT. March 23 (Interfax) - Russia will consider reciprocal measures in response to the deployment of a U.S. interceptor missile base in Europe after the base's nature and combat potential have been clarified, Russian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov announced on Thursday.
"What we need to understand is not which countries will host the U.S. interceptor missile base, but rather the nature of the base and how many and what type of missiles it will have," Ivanov told reporters during a visit to Surgut.
