WASHINGTON, March 23 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The Associated Press today reported that, "in the aftermath of the Dubai ports dispute, the Bush administration is hiring a Hong Kong conglomerate to help detect nuclear materials inside cargo passing through the Bahamas to the United States." This no-bid contract represents the first time a foreign company will be "involved in running a sophisticated U.S. radiation detector at an overseas port without American customs agents present." (Associated Press, 3/23/06)
According to the Associated Press, the company has deep contacts with the Chinese military and, according to a once- secret U.S. military intelligence report has been cited as a potential risk for "smuggling arms and other prohibited materials into the United States from the Bahamas." (Associated Press, 3/23/06)
"Even after the Dubai Ports debacle, the Bush Administration continues to cling to a pre-9/11 mentality when it comes to keeping our nation safe and secure," said Democratic National Committee spokesman Luis Miranda. "The thought that the Bush Administration would again try to outsource America's security by awarding a no-bid contract to screen cargo heading to the United States for dirty bombs and nuclear materials to a company that poses a potential risk is completely unacceptable. America's security is America's business. Democrats remain committed to the safety and security of our nation, and to once and for all closing the security gaps at our nation's ports."
