I hate them. Here is a letter from my Senator.
In an amazing show of support for our environment, last week more than 35,000 of you joined our emergency action to try and prevent the Republicans from opening the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling. Unfortunately, their tactics ultimately worked and the drilling provision was passed in the Senate as part of the budget. However, I promise you that this fight is not over. I promise you that together we will still find a way to protect the Arctic Refuge, and thwart these big oil giveaways.
While the fight for the Arctic Refuge goes on, we cannot forget another major front in our battle to protect America's undeveloped, pristine lands. So far more than 58,000 of you have signed on as citizen co-sponsors to the Roadless Area Conservation Act - legislation that would protect over 58 million acres of untouched forest and wildlife habitat. As this bill makes its way through the legislative process I am going to call on you to act again. We will need to spread the word, call Congress, write letters and do everything we can to draw attention to this issue. When you are taking on a Republican majority that stops at nothing to get its way, this kind of grassroots support is essential - your support is what it takes to win.
I can't emphasize enough how critical you are in this fight. Recent attempts to open the Arctic Refuge to drilling and convert pristine forest lands for development were not offered as clean votes, but accomplished with legislative and executive maneuvering meant to avoid just that. The more we show that we are paying attention and will speak out against these efforts, the more difficult it becomes for industry lobbyists and big oil companies to push their anti-environment agenda though Congress.
Thank you for everything you have done so far and for everything you will do in the future as we work together to win this fight.
Sincerely,
Maria Cantwell
