In opposition to killing religious people.
Call me nuts, but this case in Afghanistan wherein they are considering the death penalty for a man who has converted from Islam to Christianity should serve as a warning to our those amongst us who feel the religiously insane in our own country are harmless people who simply are of deeper faith than the rest of us.

If asked, I would self-identify as a Christian. But since I follow no organized religion and keep my faith (such as it is .... and its 'is' is personal, just to me) private, I'm not supposed to have a say in this debate.

Well, lemme tell ya, much of man's ills over the full course of human history can be traced to the conflation of religion and secular governance.

I better not hear one damned person from the American religious insane asylum gnash their teeth over this travesty. The religiously insane in our country have espoused killing those who perform abortion, have advocated for the killing of foreign leaders (Chavez, anyone?), have advocated for a religious bias in all aspects of American life and have whined long and loud for anything that doesn't fit their fucked up world view.

The case in Afghanistan is, indeed, awful. I do, indeed, advocate for the man to be left alone to practice his faith as he sees it. But I DO NOT want to hear any of the religiously insane advocate for this man. They have no right to do so. They gave up that right when they advocated for the view to trump mine.

I hope they find this untenable. Good for them. They deserve it. May they suffer long and painfully.

And has anyone noticed the current public 'debate' over this? It is framed as another assault on Christianity. It is NOT. Had he become Buddhist or Shinto he would be up against the same wall.

I am opposed to ALL religious extremism. And so should all rational people.

2. You are DEAD now
This country is fast approaching a theocracy. Once the final religious keystone has been set into place, we'll now longer have the luxury of opposing the Official religious view. What you said will lead to a death sentence.

That's why you should blaspheme while you have a chance. Our freedoms are disappearing fast and soon the auto da fes will light up the skies.

I hate these irrational bastards, so I'll be burning next to you...

3. Not so fast my friend
There are millions like husbtosparkly and me that have a big old dog in this fight. We swore to support and defend the constitution against all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. If I'm breathing, I'm fighting dobson and perkins and falwell and lesser known christian clerics who want to fuck with our constitution.

There is no difference between a radical muslim cleric and a radical christian cleric. Their goal is to remove our constitution and replace it with the bible and we will all be expected to march in lockstep or be stoned. So much for them being persecuted.

6. Okay, then
My wife and I also raised our right hands so many years ago and swore to uphold the Constitution, so we're in the fight with you.

Now we're just two startled Veterans amazed at the direction our country's taken under Bush.

The problem is--I agree--religious extremism. I'd say though the problem, when one steps back, is intolerance.
