This is from Michigan Democratic Party chair Mark Brewer. Emphasis mine.
http://www.michigandems.com/032706prs.htmlThe coalition behind the petition drive has decided to suspend the drive because it achieved the goal of a long overdue increase in the minimum wage.
We will be watching to ensure that the Legislature does not weaken the minimum wage after the election. If the Legislature attempts to repeal the increase in the minimum wage after the election – as the GOP in Alaska did in 2003 – we will be back on the streets with our petitions and with recall petitions as well.
The success of this petition drive vindicates the original purpose of direct democracy by the people: to force an obstructionist Legislature to respond to the will of the people or give the people the ability to bypass the Legislature and enact laws directly.
Because this petition drive successfully demonstrated the power of direct democracy we are already planning ballot proposals for 2008 in areas such as affordable health care for all Michigan citizens, election reform and drug industry immunity – if the Legislature refuses to act on these vital issues.
I wish it would've gone on, but oh well.
