VP running mates
Okay I am not up on history, but is it the norm for the nominee winner to choose one of the other candidates as VP?

Who was the last to do it?

1. At first, the VP was the runner-up in the election.
Then, if I'm not mistaken, the runner-up in the convention. Someone do please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know when it became tradition for the candidate to choose the running mate, but I DO remember being dumbfounded (emphasis on the dumb when Bush I chose Quayle. They deserved each other.

2000 - Neither candidate chose a primary opponent

1996 - Clinton-Gore and Republicans chose Kemp who HAD been a primary opponent

1992 - Clinton chose Gore who was NOT - Bush-Quayle again

1988 - Dukakis-Bentsen and Bush Quayle

1984 - Mondale- Ferraro and Reagan-Bush

1980 - Reagan DID select a primary opponent in Bush - Carter-Mondale

1976 - Carter selected Mondale, NOT a primary opponent Ford chose Dole also NOT a primary opponent

1972 - McGovern chose Eagleton/Shriver, neither primary opponents Nix and agnew

1968 - Humphery chose Muskie who was NOT a primary opponent, Nixon chose Agnew also NOT a primary opponent.

1964 - Johnson chose Humphery, Goldwater chose Bill Miller - neither primary opponents

So, since 1964,only Dole in '96 and Reagan in '80 selected a primary opponent.

8. Johnson was a candidate in 1960
Johnson jumped into the race for the 1960 Democratic nomination late in the game. Kennedy practically had it wrapped up when LBJ got in. So, technically he falls into the "did run" category.

7. In 1960
Kennedy chose Lyndon Johnson, who was a primary opponent. Nixon did not choose a primary opponent.

In neither 1952, nor 1956 were primary opponents chosen. Thats as far back as I'm certain of.
