What do Democrats have to do -- stand on their heads?!?
What will it take to undo even a single meme the media has grasped onto?

The "Democrats have no plan" meme got replaced by "Democrats are scattered" meme. So last Wednesday, Democratic leaders came together to offer a plan on national security, which Dean discusses here:
http://www.democrats.org/a/2006/03/real_security_t.php

General Clark's part in it was reported here:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060402/ap_on_el_ge/democrats_clark;_ylt=AkK_Bw9DdLM3YNEV0YYfN8hp24cA;_ylu=X3oDMTA5aHJvMDdwBHNlYwN5bmNhdA--

Even TV talking heads had to make mention of it.

But today, once again, the AP is back to their old familiar memes. An article titled, "Republicans Increasingly Critical of Bush," doesn't fail to reinforce the standard line on Democrats:

Republicans these days are almost sounding like perennially divided Democrats.

(snip)

The only solace to frustrated Republicans could be that Democrats seem to be struggling themselves to come up with unified positions on Iraq and many other major issues.

"They say Democrats don't stand for anything. That's patently untrue. We do stand for anything," Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., joked at a recent press dinner.

:argh:

So what do they have to do?!? Stand on their heads? Have naked press conferences? Dress alike and hold hands??

1. Very frustrating. Maybe the Dems need to call a press conference
and hope that the White House doesn't supersede it with another embarrassing Bush speech. Obama's comment, even made jokingly, isn't helping.

3. Yup!
They should find out when they're pre-empted, and sit down and wait 'til Chimpy is done, then resume. I'm serious -- shine a light on the RNC tactic, and perhaps even say (with some sarcasm) that they're just showing all due respect for the preznit.

I agree with you about Obama's joke, and should have mentioned that. It wasn't helpful, but what I'm criticizing is the media's choice to report THAT and not even MENTION the national security plan unveiled last week. (Hopefully, Democrats will take a lesson from that and avoid reinforcing it with jokes in future.)

2. we SO need a liberal magnate to buy us a REAL liberal network
seriously, we need a RAVING liberal nutjob out there if only to show what a REAL liberal extremist is. then they can realize that dan rather or any other msm voice is NOT REMOTELY out there on the fringe.

imho, that's the real reason the right wing lets nutjobs like coulter out there, so the rest of them can look moderate by comparison.

6. Good point. The people they characterize as radicals and "nutjobs"
on the left are just people who speak the truth -- like Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore. Unlike the Ann Coulters, they don't threaten violence, villify half the world, or appeal to the worst of human nature, yet THEY are cast as "fringe."

5. What meme?
It's true. Most Democrat "leaders" are pathetic--they want play it safe while the president destroys America.

8. We have almost no unified positions
Are we for staying in Iraq, sending more troops,
pulling out? Depends on who you ask.

On most issues we are all over the board.
Look at the number of 1000-plus-post posters at DU who
recite faux talking points as facts (Iran, Zarqawi, Qaida
- they believe it ALL).

Push has come to shove and we cannot pull it together.

I think we are done as a party.

10. I think there's a lot of agreement
although details on *how* to achieve goals may vary. This unified position on national security was a step in the right direction, and it's already forgotten, it seems.

I actually think it's a GOOD thing that Democrats don't just parrot scripts as Republicans do; but statements of unity, however broad, are good.

11. Could you list the party position on most issues?
I cannot and I am sure most Americans cannot.
Too many LIEbermans have infiltrated the party;
the damage is excessive and ongoing.
So much unDemocratic legislation has been rubber stamped
I cannot tell if the party has become duck or goose.
I think we are witnessing the last dying gasps of Democracy.

12. Of course I could!!
What we're witnessing is the GOP in charge of every branch of government, and the media.
