S'More Gore!
C'mon, someone tell me this guy's gonna run in '08.

He's pretty much everything I'm looking for in a candidate.

George Clooney as VP would be sweet icing. Ok, I'm dreaming.

3. I haven't forgotten how easily Gore gave up the fight over the
recount in 2000. I'm sure that he counted on folks forgetting how quickly he submitted to the BushCo. And given the opportunity both he and Kerry would do the same thing again in 2008. I will never vote for either of them again and I will most certainly not vote for DINO Hillary Clinton, (who I used to support to the nth degree).

Right now, John Edwards SEEMS like our best bet, but time will tell....

After all, it was only the supreme court of the land that had handed the election off to the village idiot. What was Gore thinking? Why didn't he call for violence against the supremes and take over the white house anyway?

Nov 7 to Dec 13: he gave up too easily, indeed...

Among the Democrats who wanted Gore to give up were Toricelli, Breaux, Kerrey & Nunn.

Two prominent members of Gore's party, Senators Robert Toricelli of New Jersey and Bob Kerrey of Nebraska, publicly suggested that he avoid dragging out the decision with a long court battle. 11/15/2000 - http://graphics.boston.com/news/politics/campaign2000/news/Democrats_back_Gore_for_recount+.shtml

If the verdict goes against Mr Gore, Mr Kerrey said he would join fellow Democrats such as Senator John Breaux of Louisiana and former Senator Sam Nunn of Georgia in pressing the vice-president to end further legal challenges to the November 7 election. November 22, 2000 - http://www.guardian.co.uk/US_election_race/Story/0,,401249,00.html

It's Friday, November 24, 2000 I'm David Brancaccio.

The United States Supreme Court will consider the election appeal of Texas Governor George W. Bush, with oral arguments set for a week from today. The appeal challenges the constitutionality of hand recounts now authorized in Florida.

****

Marketplace's Stephen Henn reports some strong voices within Al Gore's own part are beginning to express doubts on how long the Vice President should keep on fighting.

Henn: Democratic Sen. John Breaux of Louisiana has said Vice President Al Gore should concede if recounts in Florida haven't put him over the top by Sunday night. And Breaux isn't alone within the Democratic party in questioning the Vice President's commitment to keep on fighting. Others like Sen. Torricelli of New Jersey have expressed their doubts as well. But E.J. Dionne a columnist for the Washington Post and fellow at the Brookings Institution, says that probably isn't enough to convince Al Gore to give up the ghost.

Dionne: They have hinted early on that they had wanted Gore to give up and I don't think he took kindly to that at the time. I think what it would take is some main stream Democratic leader. November 24, 2000 - http://marketplace.publicradio.org/shows/2000/11/24_mpp.html

on edit: Gore fought for 36 days to get votes counted. He didn't give up until the SCOTUS decision. If he had continued to fight after that he and the Democratic party would have been hurt.

I've been interested in Gore in '08 ever since his unsung heroism in NOLA after hurricane Katrina. His speech on MLK day was electrifying. Since then, I've perused about every thread that comes up here regarding Gore. He's got a very large following, and well-deserved, IMO. I can't really hold him responsible for the fiasco in 2000; who would have guessed that such a twisted act of chutzpah would be so easily accomplished?

17. you read my mind
Jeez. I thought he fought as much as he could and then was robbed. The court stopped vote counting. What could he do after that? He conceded with class and grace. When he had licked his wounds he came back stronger, more articulate and passionate, and braver. He now does not hold back from speaking truth to power in ways most Dems are still too afraid to even echo weakly.

Politicians aren't super heroes. They are human beings that make mistakes and have flaws. What you do after the mistakes is a true show of character. Gore has character and I welcome any effort he puts towards the greater good as a candidate or not. :patriot:

19. Well stated!
All during that time, he gave short civics lessons as well -- if the nation were half as interested as he was in the rule of law, we might have actually learnt the nuances of the constitution and the electoral processes. The grace he showed through the process was just amazing. If the media had had an iota of responsibility, they would have joined Gore in educating the public and revelled in the constitutional process and its beauty and comprehensiveness...What a colossal missed opportunity...

Gore is a renniassance man, forward thinking, self examining, and willing to admit mistakes and take action to correct mistakes. He thinks outside the box, has practical solutions to serious problems, and could have a HUGE base of democratic support.

All he needs to do is run. I'm with him all the way.

Gore did what he did because he respects the law and the Constitution. I vaguely remember what that's like. If he were a pushover, he would have capitulated on election night, instead of on December 12th, after he had exhausted all of his alternatives.

I'd support him in a minute. My slogan for his primary campaign will be, "you had me at 'hello,' Al."

Gore presents clean, green theories in lecture at Drew
Calls environment a top concern, doesn't discuss political future

BY NAVID IQBAL
DAILY RECORD

MADISON -- Former Vice President Al Gore wants to change the way people think about the environment.

Gore visited Drew University Monday night as part of the Thomas H. Kean visiting lecture series to explain his theory, but media reporters were banned from the auditorium.

Instead, Gore's aides arranged for him to sit for five-minute interviews with each of three reporters.

they HAVE to hammer, hammer, hammer the evil, incompetent, lying, cheating, stealing neocon nazis. They have to hammer free and fair elections within our own borders. They have to hammer the illegal war and the torture and the scandals and the bribery and the outing and the domestic spying and the corruption.

Right now, we can wait to be Green until after we clean house.

If Gore comes out as a tree-hugger rather than a champion of truth and justice, he and those who stand with him, are toast.

33. Katrina, Rita, Wilma, Epsilon and Zeta
Remember it was the hurricanes that helped wake people up to the incompetency and corruption of this administration. It also made a lot of Americans - the ones that wouldn't listen to us before - to start questioning our involvement in Iraq and the amount of money we've spent over there. Add to this the yo-yo-ing of oil prices and people are starting to think about alternative fuels and America's fuel dependency. All of a sudden people who didn't ask questions before are now wondering about wisdom having two oil men in the highest positions in the United States government.

We can be green now. We have to be green now or we'll win battles but lose the war the really counts.

Here's an excerpt from an article published in 2004.

World Bank, Pentagon: global warming red alert
Weather of mass destruction bigger threat than terrorism

22 February 2004

Washington, DC, United States — A world thrown into turmoil by drought, floods, typhoons. Whole countries rendered uninhabitable. The political capital of the Netherlands submerged. The borders of the US and Australia patrolled by armies firing into waves of starving boat people desperate to find a new home. Fishing boats armed with cannon to drive off competitors. Demands for access to water and farmland backed up with nuclear weapons. Sound like the ravings of doom-saying environmental extremists? It's actually from a report commissioned by the Pentagon on how to ready America for the coming climate Armageddon.

Fifteen years ago, some of us were warning of the impacts of fossil fuels on the climate. The science was less conclusive than today, but we, along with most climatologists, believed that the consequences were of such magnitude that immediate action was prudent. Today, environmentalists aren't the only ones saying that. The World Bank and the Pentagon have both commissioned studies which finally admit that our world is in serious peril, and the biggest threat to our future is not terrorism, but our own dependence on fossil fuels. In other words, "We have met the enemy, and he is us."

This year, the small circle of remaining climate "skeptics" -- scientists and politicians who don't believe that global warming is happening, or who refuse to accept a human element in its making, narrowed so far that Exxon/Mobil and the President of the United States may soon be the sole, shrill naysayers.

Sir David King, Chief Scientist in Tony Blair's government, has said that global warming is a greater threat than terrorism. Hans Blix, who ran the UN weapons inspection programme in Iraq, says the same thing. source

39. Let's look at the polls
from 2000 and you'll see that Gore started his campaign behind in the polls and fought his way back to win the 2000 election. He did this despite the attacks on him in the media, Clinton's blow-job and Bradley's attacks. Why did he start so low? According to a contemporaneous CNN story

How much trouble is Gore in? Forty percent all Americans say they are not likely at all to vote for him in 2000 if the Democrats nominate him, and another 15 percent say that they are not too likely to vote for him.

So, a majority of Americans currently say that they are likely to vote against Gore even before the GOP picks its nominee. To be elected next November, Gore must win over two-thirds of the people who say they are "not too likely" to vote for him.

One of Gore's supposed advantages -- being the heir apparent of a popular president -- may actually be working against him. Fifty-two percent of all Americans say they are less likely to vote for Gore if President Bill Clinton actively supports him and campaigns for him.

Another legacy of the Clinton era -- Kosovo -- may also drag on Gore's candidacy. A majority say that Gore would do a bad job on foreign affairs if he becomes president. And despite a booming economy under his boss, just 50 percent say that Gore would do a good job with the economy if he takes over from Clinton. Poll: Majority of Americans would vote against Gore in 2000

So, he started from behind because he was vice-president. Moreover, 52% of the American public said they would be less likely to support Gore if Bill actively campaigned for him.

Suppose the year 2000 presidential election were being held today. If Vice President Al Gore was the Democratic Party's candidate and Texas Gov. George W. Bush was the Republican Party's candidate, who would you be more likely to vote for?
