In testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, he said that as Attorney General "he was the President's lawyer (you can look it up as Casey Stengel used to say).

The AG is not the President's lawyer as we all know, he's the constitutional head of the Justice Department.

So technically he was the president's lawyer when he was justifying torture and dissing the Geneva conventions. His job was to find legal loopholes so they won't be tried and hung as the war criminals that they are.
