Headed back to Crawford for closure and because we can

I never thought I'd ever return, for any reason, to Crawford, Texas. I've always subscribed to the old adage that "You can't go home again". For us, Camp Casey was a life experience; the coming together of a movement. Something very special. A defining moment, as it were. America Rising.

The weeks we spent there were incredibly rewarding. We knew that the action was making a difference and we felt that we were supporting the action in a real and valuable way. Rarely, in my almost 50 years, have I felt so alive.

In recent weeks, we have been recieving generalized emails about the Easter reunion. I kept giving it short shrift. I didn't want to push the envelope. We had a good thing and I thought it best to leave on a high note.

But, the truth is, Hurricane Katrina took away any sense of closure for us. Katrina hit our home two days before we broke Camp Casey. We had other things on our mind when we left Texas; big things. As many of you know, we were terrified; fear ruled. We really never got to say good-by.

Today, I got an email from a friend or two asking if we'd come back. And one from a cop who said he'd love to see us again. And then a phone call from I guy I met in the ditch who I never imagined I'd ever hear from again. "Are you guys coming?" And it just kept happening. "Will you be there?" "We're all going to be there!" Lots of contacts. Lots of love. Lots of "Don't stop now".

I mentioned this weirdness to my wife and her eyes lit up. I knew the karma was right.

We're going back to Crawford. All three of us.

The hippy lawyers are back in the house.

We'll meet the Easter Bunny in the ditch.

What do you think? We put a note up in the Peace House in August with our cell phone numbers but no one called us.

There has to be an easier way to hook up. What do you think?
