Democratic 06 Slogans.... got any?
Off the top of my head:

Democrats: Undoing The Damage
We DO Care About Gettin' Bin Laden
Who Lost The Mideast?
Don't Let War Become The Last Refuge of Scoundrels
Stop The GOP Looting of our Children's Future
Make Neo-cons Neo-convicts.
Government for citizens, not crony's.

The slogan basics, and Mark Warner,.

It's got to be a positive slogan. Almost everything in this thread is an attack and that's not going to help one bit. I would focus on the right track/wrong track aspect and form a slogan emphasizing Democrats will restore the right track.

50. Awesome thread!
See also the beginnings of a broad-based strategy for "Framing and Buzzwords," which builds on some discussions started here.

In response to a similar inquiry on Myspace, one woman ("Mrs. Q") had the following suggestions:

How about some Dem. buzzwords:
Common sense = Dem
Eagle (soaring) = Dem
Balanced budget = Dem
Waste cutting = Dem
Religious Freedom = Dem ( I know - same as next in list - but each right could be emphasized)
Constitution/Bill of Rights = Dem
Educational excellence = Dem
Small government = Dem
Fair taxation = Dem
Fight terrorism smarter = Dem
Balance of powers (not skewed toward Exec. branch) = Dem
Conservative = Greedy
Conservative = Robber Baron
Conservative = Big business
Conservative = Cronyism
Conservative = Burden falls on the backs of the workers

This semantics thing worked well for Newt G. When something WORKS, there is no reason not to adopt it.

57. we need targeted framing
Newt did give us all a lesson in the power of framing... or perhaps his original list was more labelling... trying to associate keywords with one or the the other party.

I think Dems need to take it to next level by making each word serve as many purposes as it can. For instance it's one thing to try and create an identity as the words Mrs Q provided... it's another to target a GOP weakness... or even hope to frame a strength into a weakness. Conversely there has to be some way to frame one's own message in a way it resonates well... and to dig ones self out of negative frames created by the GOP.

64. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that the leading edge...
...of the messaging has to be positive, but it can include a subtext that change is needed.

For me personally, it's hard to do that because it's like trying to give a pep talk at the site of a train wreck.

But it's in our American psyche that we have to hear about the bright path up ahead and not about where we've gone off the rails.

Though I've criticized his delivery in the debate with Cheney, I think Edwards was on the right track with that kind of hopeful, folksy-yet-articulate approach that got Carter and Clinton elected. You know, "let's build a great world for our children," as opposed to calling the elephant in the room: "What the fuck are we doing in Iraq, and where did the frigging surplus go!?"

My ideal candidate would know how to talk in the positive terms the voting public demands... coupled with a true progressive agenda.

70. I think there has to be a tasteful mix
I think there has to be a tasteful mix of a positive message and one where the Dems contrast themselves with the Right.

I don't know if you heard Kos on NPR today. He kept claiming the Democratic message was OK... the REAL problem was the Dems needed infrastructure. I disagree. I believe that a compelling message can bypass infrastructure. But I just don't see the Dems having one yet.

They can claim values like equality, opportunity, democracy etc... but what we often see is the terms are used for window-dressing. For example there's nothing democratic about our system... yet the Dems refuse to ever talk what democracy means or about reforming our system... even as a majority of the voting age population sits out most elections. The Dems could have indexed the minimum wage to inflation 40 years ago. Why didn't they? They could have opposed NAFTA yet Clinton embraced it... insuring that there'd be downward wage pressures in the US. Dems can't even be honest about the deficits. Why? Because sometimes being less than honest works in their favor. We saw that with Kerry's deficit reduction plan in 04. It concealed a trillion in borrowing over 5 years.

What I want to see from the Dems is HONESTY... not spin. But I'm not holding my breath. And even if they win this November... it's sure to be an anti-GOP vote rather than an endorsement of the Dems.

73. I agree, positive message with the undercurrent of change-is-needed
I didn't hear Kos, but writer georgia10 on his site made what I think is the correct point, that it's money and message: http://vastleft.blogspot.com/2006/04/pay-it-say-it.html

I think Feingold is doing something that other Democrats should follow -- taking the progressives out of the shadows and refusing to be intimidated by conventional wisdom such as "you can't get elected if you support gay marriage." Deep down people know we need a change, they're just looking for someone they can rally around, and I agree that it can and should be done without selling our souls.

That said, I'm not going to hatchet our guys if they get a little glib, and if they're not able to reinvent the country in the first 100 days of a new administration. Perfection is not an option, I just want an smart, honest, caring person to do the best job that he or she can.

51. The Democrats: Check and balance
I hear about the need for "check and balance" from all walks of political life. We might as well tap into it.

In '06, that's what the Democrats can offer to fence-sitters--a chance to keep the excesses (and most people will admit that the Goopers have excesses of one kind or another) in check.

It's not exciting, it's not "Throw the corrupt mofos in JAIL" as I'd like, but that'd be my political-consultant take.

58. Why Can't The Dems EVER Make a Good Case About.....
It's one thing to discuss slogans... but slogans can't make up for the lack of substance and poor strategy on the Democratic side. For example... I've yet to hear a compelling argument from Dems that as long as we're in debt... then ALL tax cuts are borrowing. I've yet to hear them even be honest about deficits... tending to use the bogus unified budget figures.

Dems tend to soft on some market approaches say for health care. But they never come right out and challenge the religious belief that markets are wonderfully efficient. They are not.

These are arguments that work towards their favor but Dems refuse to use them.

81. I don't know about a slogan but I'd like to see a commercial
showing mug shots and the list of charges of Abromoff, DeLay, Libby, the latest two pervs from HS and however many more end up being arrested before the election along with the words DISGRACE,DISHONESTY,SHAME,SCANDAL.

Then maybe something along the lines of "A vote for Democrats is a vote to restore DIGNITY in Government."

Sadly, that is just a START of the huge and multifaceted message we need to get out there!
