USA Today: Republicans may be in path of political 'hurricane'

"By Susan Page and Richard Wolf, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Is a tidal wave gathering?

The announcement Tuesday by Rep. Tom DeLay, the former House majority leader, that he would resign from Congress signaled what Democrats hope for and Republicans fear: That Democrats could be swept into power in November by the sort of political tsunami that helped Republicans win control of Congress in 1994.

"We know that there's a hurricane coming, and it's going to hit the Republicans in November," says Charlie Cook of the non-partisan Cook Political Report. "We're just trying to figure out how big this thing is."

Dick Armey, who became House Republican leader when the party gained control in 1994, acknowledges that Republicans have "set the stage for the Democrats." However, he says, Democrats need to offer an alternative rather than just attack. "I think it takes a double-barreled shotgun, and they've only got one barrel."

snip:"In the latest survey, registered voters said they were leaning toward Democratic congressional candidates over Republicans by 55% to 39%. That's the biggest lead Democrats have had since they lost control of the House."

If the Democrats take the House this November

10 members of the Progressive Caucus would become chairmen of committees

John Conyers becomes Chairman of the Judiciary Committee

Even a vote for a conservative Dem is a vote for Conyers and the 10

10. I dunno--if Cheney had had two barrels, he might be awaiting
trial for murder, right now.

5. I can't decide whether I think this headline is in bad taste or not.
I'm leaning toward "not."

Instant karmic payback's a bitch, fellas. Just...lean away from the wind? Good luck with that.

7. That's how I saw it. As a semi-subtle nod to their karmic debt.
Don't worry, though. They can evacuate if they REALLY want to.

6. "Democrats need to offer an alternative rather than just attack."
Uh huh. Then you can say they hate America, that the plan comforts and aids terrorists, that the plan is a political stunt, and that they're "flipflopping" if any part of the plan differs in any way with ANYTHING any Democrat has ever said or been accused of saying. That about cover it?

12. Pretty much. Now if we can just get them on top we can see what that
LOOKS like in action. Ah, to turn on the news, any news, without it making me scream for the entire program. The good old days.

15. Catapulting the propaganda. "dems don't have a plan to bail our sorry
asses out." How dare the minority position not be ready to cover for our multiple failures? We, the GOP party of ethics have plans. We plan to bankrupt America financially and morally. We plan illegal invasions, trillion dollar debts, and a stagnant economy. Gee, dems, what's your plan?

I'm guessing that the Democrats plan on having to clean up after the elephants again. I'm guessing that the next president, a democrat, will be hounded from the right by the same people who blindly enabled this administration's disastrous policies. There will be plenty of time for the Republican loyalists to complain that the Democrats haven't cleaned up the GOP mess fast enough.

There aren't going to be a lot of happy outcomes in foreign or domestic policy. That's the GOP crime family's legacy.

What's the Republican plan?

8. Wonder how they'll like being on the receiving end of shock and awe?
Democrats are winning some local elections in strong Republican areas. That should be sending the first warning wave to Republicans. The message is clear: America does not want, and will not support, Republican leadership.

17. Well they had their chance...
Controlling all levers of power in DC and yet they opt for greed, corruption, and personal enrichment.

Now they've been exposed for what we knew they were. It just took others a little longer to catch onto Republican family values: Everything for us, nothing for you. Except the bill.

Oh, look down the street! Ed and Bill want to get MARRIED! We'll protect you AND save marriage AND save Terri Schiavo!

Just let us pick your wallets and sell out your future for a few more years...........please?
