Good news from Anchorage
Our young, progressive Democratic mayor, Mark Begich, who won three years ago by 17 votes, has defeated his closest opponent in yesterday's mayoral race by almost 8,000 votes (with absentee ballots yet to be counted). Begich, 44, is the son of late Democratic Congressman Nick Begich, who was killed in a mysterious plane crash in 1972 with Hale Boggs, Democratic House Majority leader from Louisiana (http://www.check-six.com/lib/Famous_Missing/Boggs.htm).

I foresee at least a governorship in Mark's future. Remember his name.

1. Is the worm turning way out west?
Have these flinty, self-assured types got a bellyful of 'Lican lies and thievery?

2. Alaskans are an independent lot...
...and they don't like getting fooled. This was a Democratic state before the pipeline and the influx of oilmen from Texas and Oklahoma. Hopefully we are returning to our roots.

6. Accu-Vote...

...which I guess is a subset of Diebold? I don't exactly understand how it works. We have paper ballots where you black out the circle next to what you're voting for. If your ballot is screwed up some way (like if you accidentally vote for two people), the ballot box won't take it.

12. Not touch screen
Those were rejected here in 2004. We have paper ballots and I haven't heard anything about contesting. Now, if Mark HADN'T won, I think people would be screaming because it was pretty obvious he was going to take it running away. I doubt his conservative challenger is going to raise any kind of fuss because even he had to admit that everybody likes Mark Begich.

13. Haha - how old was Tom Delay in 1972?

The sad part though is that Nick Begich's demise led to the rise of that royal asshole Don Young, who we can't seem to get rid of.

From Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Young

Alaska's at-large congressman, Democrat Nick Begich, disappeared in a plane crash on October 16, 1972. He was reelected to the House that November, but was declared dead on December 29. Young, who had been the Republican candidate against Begich in November, ran in the special election in March 1973 and won, just barely defeating Democrat Emil Notti.
