"America Comes First" - Howard Dean
I heard him say this on Hardball and all I could think of is what a better slogan this is than whatever the current Dem slogan is. It can be applied to so many issues.

21. HERE'S THE FIVE POINTS AS DEAN SEES THEM
In the words of Howard Dean: One, we want honesty and openness back in government again. Two, we want a strong national defense, first of all, based on telling the truth to our citizens and our soldiers before we send troops abroad to defend America. Three, we want American jobs that will stay in America using energy independence as a new industry to create millions of construction and manufacturing jobs. Four, we want a health-care system that works for everybody, just like 36 other countries have in the world. And, five, we want a strong public education system so we can have optimism and opportunity back in America. I think that's a pretty good agenda, and I think it's one that can win it for us in '06.

right-wingers in Europe have always said to create sectarian tension against "foreigners". Of course they use their own country's name.

yep it can be applied to many issues, even the nastiest ones.

it amazes me that the "biggest" nation in the world still have the need to identify itself in relation to others...

how about "The People comes first"...

4. Because our country, all on its own, is in real danger.
I think our Constitution is in danger. Saying so doesn't exclude concern for other countries.

There's nothing wrong with...
saying "America Comes First" if you are an American. I wouldn't expect anyone from a foreign country to say it.

Speaking for myself, I don't attach all the negative meanings to it like you seem to. "America Comes First" is merely a catchphrase meant to energize the Democratic party going into election season and nothing to do with foreign politics.

14. obviously there are different worlds...
"America comes first" relative to what ? who is coming second ? the Chinese, The Japanese, The Mexicans ? It must mean that American priorities must come first regarding to nany "foreign" ones, external or internal.

Is America under invasion ?

It's for me a nationalistic theme. The problem in the US isn't the nation, it's the government.

I can tell you that if somebody in Europe (in its own country) says "Sweden comes first", "Germany comes first" etc... this person is to 99% a freeper. No others says that kind of stuff. Automatically it means fuck the immigrants, fuck the neighbours.

How come it is SO different in the US ? I understand that Dean is good man and means well. But how come this constant need to define the NATION in relation to something else.

The CENTRAL issue with America is internal : government and corruption. It's not external.

20. then the motto is "the people first"
then no confusion is possible. BTW it's exactly where the issue is : people first, or corporations first ?

27. It is a nationalistic sounding phrase, for European ears
I see how it's meaning can be different; the infamous "Deutschland über alles"(Germany first) originally was intended just like that.

25. Because the candidates are not asking for the job of representing "people"
They're applying for the job of representing the interests of Americans.

That's not predjudice, that's focus.

28. If "people come first", Then nobody comes first, really.
Unless it's people vs. cockroaches.

I don't have a problem with it. Whether we are the biggest nation or the smallest, we are still a nation and we are putting our nation first. It's not a question of identity. It's a question of policy.

29. Disagree with you on that one.
B*sh has made it clear that he doesn't work for Americans. He works for his paymasters in ME oil. That's great if you're an oil billionaire but not so great if you're one of the several hundred million Americans who aren't billionaires.

Dean quite rightly believes an elected representative should work for his own constituents not foreign interests. That's just plain common sense.

He is SUCH a great spokesman for us - so intelligent, calm, and reasonable. But speaks the truth, even if ugly, in a reasonable way.

6. I AGREE with Dean.....

America BEFORE party. :patriot: I think that is part of what it means...and General Clark has been saying that one (America before Party for a while)..... and I am very happy if it becomes a piece of our slogan.

Look, People can read into it what they want (which makes it most effective)....and so, yes, the bigots will read into it that we are saying American schools before Iraqi schools. I don't have a problem with this slogan at all.

7. Exactly. The opposite of Delay.
Mr. Delay said something about how he was putting the party first. It's what Republicans have been doing on issue after issue; doing what's good for their party and not what's good for the country.

But the slogan also appeals to the people who call Dems the "Hate America" crowd; it steals their self-described monopoly on patriotism.

17. check this "America first" site...
http://www.americafirstparty.org/

The Constitution does not allow our nation's armed forces ever to be under foreign command, which has become common practice under present UN and NATO deployment. The Constitution requires that the President of the United States shall be the Commander in Chief of our nation's armed forces. It does not provide any means for the President to delegate this authority to any domestic or foreign person or organization, as has happened with NATO and the UN forces of late. Both the UN and the NATO treaty claim authority to direct our nation's armed forces into a war without the Constitutional requirement of Congress declaring war. Since NATO no longer serves a defensive purpose for the United States, it is therefore time that we withdraw from NATO and permit Europe the task of defending itself.

The United States must withdraw from the United Nations immediately and require the UN headquarters to relocate out of the United States. Our participation as a member nation in this organization was never constitutional and now places our nation's sovereignty in extreme peril. The United States must promptly withdraw from all international monetary and financial institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, WTO, NAFTA, GATT, etc. These institutions violate the meaning and intent of our Constitution.

Some of these organizations also claim the unconstitutional power to levy tax on the United States Government and the American citizens. The U.S. Federal Government does not have any Constitutional authority to tax the American people or use any U.S. funds for the specific purpose of providing aid of any kind to foreign governments. Therefore, the United States Congress will terminate immediately all programs of foreign aid, whether military or non-military, to any foreign government, or to any international organization, including the United Nations, the IMF, the World Bank, and other similar institutions.

The America First Party is totally opposed and unequivocally rejects the World Court because it violates and claims authority to overrule the United States Constitution. The World Court is just another nice-sounding world organization on the surface, which proclaims to do good and honorable things, but has the sinister and evil power to end the sovereignty of all nations. The America First Party is totally against a New World Order or any one-world government, not simply because it is unconstitutional and would end this nation's sovereignty, but because it will end up enslaving all people except the elite.

classic bullshit

19. I like it !
For me, it says that the needs of America are more important than the needs of the Iraqis. Why can we build health centers in Iraq so the Iraqi people can get free health care but we still have 45 million uninsured without healthcare in this country? Why do we spend billions and billions to rebuild Iraq and New Orleans and our Gulf Coast is more or less ignored? America should come first!
