Poll at Odds With Katie Couric Move By DAVID BAUDER, AP Television Writer
Wed Apr 5, 7:16 PM ET

NEW YORK - Now that Katie Couric is making the move from dawn to dusk, her legacy and the future of CBS News depends on an audience that, according to a new poll, prefers to see her in the morning.

Asked if they would rather see Couric in her longtime role as "Today" host or as the first woman to anchor a network weekday evening newscast on her own, 49 percent favored the morning and 29 percent said evening, according to a poll conducted this week by The Associated Press and TV Guide.

After 15 years as morning television's queen, Couric confirmed Wednesday that she is leaving NBC's "Today" show to become anchor and managing editor of the "CBS Evening News" this fall. Her audience at "Today" is about 6 million viewers; "CBS Evening News" has about 7.5 million.

++++++++++++++++

BTW - this bugged me about the article: They called Dan Rather 'Ousted'. I thought he retired. I mean, sure there was some stink about the story but he still stuck around and lets face it, he was well past the age of retirement

2. This is another "distraction" story
Now, I don't watch the TODAY show these days, though I used to when I was a wage slave. It was an OK show, for what it was, which is a gentle way to get your ass out of bed, a dash of news, nothing too heavy, with the stories recycled for people leaving for work at different times.

The woman did 15 years in the job, and came there from covering the Hill and DC politics. She's surely not stupid, she's probably got a few ideas about how she wants to run the program. Maybe they're good, who knows yet?

I say let her go and give it a shot. She'll either make it or she won't. Either way, it's a good payday for her.

But hey, so long as the media gives us breathy non-news updates on the simple fact that CBS hired this woman, they aren't talking about the tough stuff--like the failures in Iraq, the creeping Talibanization of Afghanistan, and all the woes in other hotspots around the globe! It's like Michael Jackson coverage, without the fake nose and child molestation....

3. That's how everyone sees her right now
because she's been in the job for 15 years. I think those stats really don't say much other than than that. I would have been surprised if it was the reverse. Give her some time to settle into her new role and I think those numbers will flip.

4. I sent an email to CBS Evening News last night telling them 'good-bye'.
Said it was a shame that the network who had Walter Conkrite and Dan Rather would stoop to an air-head to please their corporate masters.
