RW email
Email from a friend's bf who gets verbally violent if I even stray into anything political:

JOHN GLENN SAID

Things that make you think a little:

There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq in January.
In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the
month of January. That's just one American city,
about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq.

When some claim that President Bush shouldn't
have started this war, state the following:

a. FDR led us into World War II.

b. Germany never attacked us; Japan did.
>From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost ...
an average of 112,500 per year.

c. Truman finished that war and started one in Korea.
North Korea never attacked us..
>From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost ...
an average of 18,334 per year.

d John F. Kennedy started the Vietnam conflict in 1962.
Vietnam never attacked us.

e. Johnson turned Vietnam into a quagmire.
>From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost ..
an average of 5,800 per year.

f. Clinton went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent.
Bosnia never attacked us.
He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three
times by Sudan and did nothing. Osama has attacked us on
multiple occasions.

g. In the years since terrorists attacked us , President Bush
has liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled
al-Qaida, put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran, and, North
Korea without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who
slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining
about how long the war is taking.
But
It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno
to take the Branch Davidian compound.
That was a 51-day operation..

We've been looking for evidence for chemical weapons
in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find
the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the
Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard
than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his
Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took
to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB!
The Military morale is high!

The biased media hopes we are too ignorant
to realize the facts

But Wait .

There's more!

JOHN GLENN (ON THE SENATE FLOOR)
Mon, 26 Jan 2004 11:13

Some people still don't understand why military personnel
do what they do for a living. This exchange between
Senators John Glenn and Senator Howard Metzenbaum
is worth reading. Not only is it a pretty impressive
impromptu speech, but it's also a good example of one
man's explanation of why men and women in the armed
services do what they do for a living.

This IS a typical, though sad, example of what
some who have never served think of the military.

Senator Metzenbaum (speaking to Senator Glenn):
"How can you run for Senate
when you've never held a real job?"

Senator Glenn (D-Ohio):
"I served 23 years in the United States Marine Corps.
I served through two wars. I flew 149 missions.
My plane was hit by anti-aircraft fire on 12 different
occasions. I was in the space program. It wasn't my
checkbook, Howard; it was my life on the line. It was
not a nine-to-five job, where I took time off to take the
daily cash receipts to the bank."

"I ask you to go with me ... as I went the other day...
to a veteran's hospital and look those men ...
with their mangled bodies in the eye, and tell THEM
they didn' t hold a job!

You go with me to the Space Program at NASA
and go, as I have gone, to the widows and Orphans
of Ed White, Gus Grissom and Roger Chaffee...
and you look those kids in the eye and tell them
that their DADS didn't hold a job.

You go with me on Memorial Day and you stand in
Arlington National Cemetery, where I have more friends
buried than I'd like to remember, and you watch
those waving flags.

You stand there, and you think about this nation,
and you tell ME that those people didn't have a job?

What about you?"

For those who don't remember ..
During W.W.II, Howard Metzenbaum was an attorney
representing the Communist Party in the USA.

Now he's a Senator!

If you can read this, thank a teacher.
If you are reading it in English thank a Veteran.

It might not be a bad idea to keep this circulating

Scroll down to "update"

In 2005, someone prefaced the John Glenn/Howard Metzenbaum article with the following item about Iraq. This addendum has nothing to do with John Glenn — it's an anonymous piece that has been floating around the Internet since 2004, but because it has been tacked onto an article about Glenn, readers have been misled into thinking that it is a transcription of something he said:

6. UH I thought...
we declared war on JAPAN...and only by DEFAULT Germany and Italy. True or not? because I hate to think that freeps think they can use ignorance and lies to justify GOING TO WAR WITH A COUNTRY THAT DIDN'T ATTACK US, eschewing a country that actually harboured those WHO DID (yes I know we are in Afghanistan, but how's that osama thing going?)

but than again we are talking about freepers.

12. Here's the WWII Chronology:
Japan attacks the US fleet at Pearl Harbor
US declares war on Japan
Japan's Axis partner Germany declares war on US
US declares war on Germany

So we did not intitiate hostilites against either country.

19. Slight correction.

The United States did not declare war on Japan until a joint session of Congress the following day. Hitler was roused out of bed immediately after the attack on Pearl Harbor so he could sign a declaration of war against the United States in the middle of the night.

So Germany declare war on the US before the US declared war on Japan.

The idiot who penned the original message didn't even get that close.

7. Okay... *rolls up sleeves*
Edited on Thu Apr-06-06 01:29 PM by Iblis
Both Korea and Vietnam were "police actions"; in Korea we were actually under the auspices of the UN, IIRC. If you believe the Goverment, North Vietnam actually did "attack" us--Remember the Gulf of Tonkin? Wait. Suddenly the right are saying we DIDN'T belong in VietNam? WTF?

Germany and Japan, along with Italy, were the Axis powers. By declaring war on one, we had to declare war on the others. Plus, Germany would have taken us on eventually. Wait. Now the Right says we shouldn't have been in WWII? WTF? Are they saying we should have left the Nazis alone?

If you support Genocide in Europe, I guess that's your own business.

The word is not final on North Korea, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran and who called Hussein a terrorist?

Ad Homenim attacks re: Clinton, Reno and Kennedy just make you look silly.

Who says that we've "taken" Iraq? What will determine victory? If we are done, and have "taken" Iraq, then why isn't my sister-in-law back home at her job instead of in Iraq? Incidentally, military morale ISN'T that high. Frankly, it never is no matter what's going on. :-)

You've also taken some liberties with this email: John Glenn never said ANY of the things that you attribute to him in the first half and the exchange with Sen Metzenbaum has NOTHING to do with any of the above statements and wasn't impromptu by a long shot. Do your research.

Okay, anybody else want to help?

21. Here's one to kill his "Clinton didn't take Osama from Sudan" claim.
And it's from the Washington Moonie Times, no less:

"No one should believe these allegations by Mr. Miniter's source, Fateh Erwa — a Sudanese intelligence officer known for his penchant to deceive — that there was an offer to hand bin Laden over to the United States. Certainly, no offer was ever conveyed to any senior official in Washington. Had the Sudanese been serious about offering bin Laden to the United States, they could have communicated such an offer to any number of senior Clinton administration officials. It did not happen.

"Mr. Miniter also claims that Sudan repeatedly tried to provide voluminous intelligence files on bin Laden to the CIA, the FBI, and senior Clinton administration officials and would be "repeatedly rebuffed through both formal and informal channels." Absurd. In fact, it was precisely the other way around.

"On multiple occasions, and in venues ranging from Addis Ababa to Virginia, Washington, New York and Khartoum, the United States aggressively pressed the Sudanese to prove their alleged commitment to cooperating on terrorism, by severing their close ties with known terrorists, arresting specific individuals and providing specific intelligence information to us. Yet, despite frequent promises of cooperation, presumably in the hopes of getting off the terrorism list and out from under U.N. sanctions, the Sudanese consistently failed to deliver."
