There is little doubt that racism is alive and well in 2006. But what is unfortunate is when elected officials cry racism, when instead, their bad decisions made a situation unnecessary.

It is her arrogance that is the reason behind this. She has tried to frame this issue as racial profiling, and others have said that the officer should never have touched her. But her actions led to the confrontation, pure and simple.

McKinney has long been a freedom fighter, willing to stand up to oppression and fight for African Americans. She had the courage to question the Bush Administration for a variety of reasons, even losing her seat because of her unwillingness to alter her views to satisfy her critics.

We have stood with McKinney, but rallying around her on this issue is beyond us, and her actions are indefensible. She may not be able to get out of this jam with an apology. If the grand jury indicts, there will be a trial, and likely some sort of plea.

IMO, Republicans have put big money into the hands of African American Newspapers and it is a miracle that my people have been able to think for themselves as much as they do.

Rep. McKinney got caught up in the events and soon a story she thought she was controlling was controlling her. Her initial action brought out those who knew how to push her button...primarily the corporate media and this story went into hyperdrive. What should have been settled in the Security office of the Capitol was fueled by two sides with ruffled feathers...each instigating the other. The more McKinney reacted, the bigger a fool she appeared...and all over what everyone agrees was a trivial matter.

I have tremendous respect for Roland Martin...and I can see how McKinney's grandstanding trivializes the serious issue of racial profiling. There's a big difference between being stopped primarily because you didn't have the proper badge as opposed to being stopped in a white suburb because the car you're driving doesn't fit the profile of what a "black drives".

There needed for some perspective to be put here and the Defender had done it. Hopefully Rep. McKinney's appology will take this issue off the corporate media radar and within the next couple weeks we'll learn that the entire matter has been dropped. Time to move along to issues that really matter...

I work in a large organization and I am REQUIRED to wear my ID badge at all times when I am on campus.

It's difficult for the Cap police to recognize every member. If she wasn't recognized, the simple response would have been, "I'm a Member of Congress" or "I'm Cynthia McKinney." She was stopped - as she should have been - because, recognizing her or seeing her ID pin, she appeared to be a civilian going into the Capitol without going through the metal detector.
