Your Opinion on Anti - War Billboard
Be creative and remember that text is very hard to read so must use sparingly.

The intent is we can't afford three more years much less the three that past.

I plan on changing the "S" in Bush to a dollar sign.

Thoughts?

Other than that it looks great. :applause:

6. Don't like the finger pointing
A little too close to a "fuehrer salute," and a very aggressive move towards drivers. Look strong, but save the aggressive posture for another day. And all the best in your campaign.

Simplify. Most billboards.. (or the most effective ones) use only 3-5 words
and communicate a singular message. Start taking things out... you'll find
that you don't need them.. and your message will be stronger.. and more confident.

BIG SIMPLE HEADLINE: (like END THE WAR)
CALL TO ACTION: (like VOTE FOR CARL)
SINGLE VISUAL (your smiling mug)

That's all you really need. Try playing around with reducing the
number of things going on and I think you'll like the result.

10. K&R More DUers should know about your campaign.
The billboard is great. I esp. like the military man holding antiwar sign which reflects the reality of the soldiers who have been sold into slavery of many rotations more than they signed up for and their experiences rather than then chickenhawk yellophants Disney phantasy of war and our troops.

23. That's the best part!
His picture is a really powerful image. I would get rid of most of the words, that picture says it all. Maybe say:
SHEELER FOR SENATE
END BUSH'S WAR
WWW. etc

11. A few copyeditor-type nags
1: I'd get the "for" onto that sign between Sheeler and Senate somewhere. either that or separate the text somehow (different horizontal baseline, font, size) so that it doesn't look like "SHEELER U.S. SENATE" is designed to be read as a sentence.

Hell, I'd even cut "U.S." to get "for" back!

2: "Fund Our Future Not Bush's War" needs a comma after Future. As-is, it looks like a sign you might see at a protest, but not a carefully thought-out campaign sign. You want to look like your sign has been copyedited. Also, i'd even suggest using sentence case instead of title case - maybe caps + small caps would keep the "headline" look without Shouting At The Reader All The Time :)

3: You use italics on all but one line. That makes the one line w/out italics stand out more. Fine if that's what you want to emphasize, but somehow I doubt it!

4: Maybe photoshop out the smaller text on the soldier's sign - it's distracting, especially since the sign is folded in. As you said, text is hard to read.

Hope you don't mind the critique.

17. Why the sign is good as it stands.
1. Top line is good as is. He's running for US Senate, not state senate, so he needs to leave it as is. It's standard format on political signs.

2. On any sign, when you separate text with a line break, you don't have to add punctuation. His line is separated with a line break, so it's fine.

3. I think he is wanting to emphasize is run for Senate.

4. People who will be voting in the election in which Carl is running will be passing that billboard every day. The smaller items in the image are good, because those are the things they will notice after first impact of the larger text and photos. I think the soldier holding the anti-war sign packs a good second-impact punch.

Hope you don't mind my critiques of your critiques. :) :hi:

Getting feedback of different kinds from different people. This is how a true leader should make decisions. Especially important policy decisions like this one

12. The Marine in uniform
Edited on Fri Apr-07-06 02:12 PM by Jersey Devil
1 - Is he a real Marine (that you have a release from)? If not they will crucify you.

btw, the gloves holding the sign look Photoshopped, like cartoon gloves.

2 - If a real Marine, won't he get in trouble if on active duty?

22. after future
You have a independant clause and a dependant clause. You need to have a comma.

30. You are correct, but I think a comma may make it look more
cluttered. There is a lot going on in this sign already.

25. Looks great as is!

Now, I happen to like, "Iraq War legal? Moral? I don't know. But I do know it was STUPID."

I find that even many people who feel we have to "stay the course" agree with sentiment. But that is an issues message, not a "vote for Xxxx" message.

29. Make the image of the Marine take up more space.
Make his image bigger than Sheeler's and you make quite an impact, IMHO.

If I remember correctly from my graphic design studies, it's important to do things in odd numbers (which you've done with the 2 images and the text) and for one thing to have more import (read space) than the others.

The image of that Marine sends a powerful message and needs to be the most important image.
