Porter campaign says Bush coming to Las Vegas (Reid's territory)

LAS VEGAS (AP) - President George Bush is scheduled to appear at a fundraiser for Rep. Jon Porter and the Nevada Republican party April 24, the congressman's campaign confirmed Friday.

Porter, who is seeking a third term in the House, sent out e-mails Thursday alerting supporters of the planned $500-per-plate luncheon at The Venetian hotel-casino on the Las Vegas Strip. Supporters can pay an additional $1,600 to have their photograph taken with the president, the invitation said.

The White House would not confirm the appearance.

Porter's campaign made the announcement as the president hit a new low in public opinion polls for his handling of Iraq and the war on terror, and for his overall job performance. An AP-Ipsos poll released Friday found nearly 70 percent of Americans think the nation is headed in the wrong direction, and only 36 percent of the public approves of Bush's job performance.

Porter campaign manager Mike Slanker said he's not concerned the low numbers will affect the congressman's campaign.
