Kerry Speaks the Truth to Power on Meet The Press, Many Heed His Call
John Kerry Speaks the Truth to Power on Meet The Press, Many Heed His Call
April 9th, 2006 @ 10:06 am

This morning on Meet the Press, John Kerry continued to be the leading voice to get tough with the Iraqis and bring our troops home.

It bears asking, how, at this point, can anyone still think that we should be sacrificing American soldiers because Iraqi politicians refuse to get serious, step up and do what it’s going to take to form their own democracy?

John Kerry is right – If Iraqis are unwilling or unable to build a unity government in five months after their much-touted election, they are not ever going to do it.

This is personal for John Kerry. He has consistently demonstrated the character, the conscience and the courage to speak the truth to power when the lives of American troops are in danger. This is the John Kerry we first met 35 years ago, when he asked the Senate , “How do you ask a man to be the last man to die for a mistake?”

Now, John Kerry is speaking with the same courage and the same conviction about Iraq, saying “Half of the service members listed on the Vietnam Wall died after America’s leaders knew our strategy would not work. It was immoral then and it would be immoral now to engage in the same delusion.”

John Kerry is speaking the truth to power and America is responding… from the grassroots to our military and beyond, many are heeding the call of his Iraq proposal…

2. I Will Vote for Him
If he becomes our primary winner. He's been right on the money from the beginning. And no he didn't vote for the war assholes. He voted for a resolution that had requirements in there for there to be a war. Bush ignored those requirements and broke the law by unilaterally invading a soveriegn nation that was no threat to the U.S.

3. He never sounded better than this morning
I would love to see him as Sec'y Of State...NOT Prez. He is just not a great campaigner. I have learned my lesson. I will not support anyone in Congress for Prez....too much history to nail them on. I think Wes Clark is perfect for 2008

8. He could easily do either.
If not president, then yes, Sec. of State or Ambassador to the U.N. Anything where good diplomacy is needed.

They would have nailed anybody, Congressperson or not. They were already beginning to smear to both Clark and Dean, remember, during the primaries.

The obvious advantage to having a Senator be President is because they can walk right into the job without that on-the-job training that governors need, where they have to screw a few things up before they get the hang of it. Especially if the Senator has experience in Foreign Relations.

14. For me, its not about experience
Fuck, could ANYONE do a WORSE job than Cheney & Rummy that combined have almost 100 years of experience! It's about GETTING elected. The Congress has an easy voting record that can easily be distorted

20. I'm with ya...
that's why our president's, such as they are, almost always come from the ranks of governors. They have histories too, however it's more difficult to twist their histories, or take them out of context....."I voted for the 87 billion before I voted against it"......you know the drill.

6. Why is he shifting blame to the Iraqi people? That's Bush's talking
point lately. The blame for his war goes entirely to Bush and his band of insane neocons. I really hate when I hear the right now blaming the Iraqis for 'not getting off their rear-ends and taking a stand' and now, Kerry's joining that chorus? And he thinks talking about impeachment is a waste of time? What is he doing, trying to get Bush off the hook?

15. The thought never crossed my mind. Iraqis never asked
for our screwed up pious freaking idea of good government called DEEMOCRACY. If I was Iraqi I would say SCREW YOU U.S.A. and your DEEMOCRACY B.S.
Who the hell are we to export 1776 like it's just too damn good not to have?
Were the Vietnamese pleading with us to bomb them into democracy? Last I heard people want to raise their families and have food
and not die violently and stuff like that.
Of course the Iraqi's haven't written a Preamble to their constitution yet. They aren't protestant puritan white Northern Europeans!
We need to cut this crap out and concentrate on the failures of our own DEEMOCRACY.

16. Not the Iraqi people
Their government. Often times an elected government is not the same as the voters who sent them there. Kerry never blamed the Iraqi people for the delay in forming a government. He blames the factionalism and the inability of the Iraqi pols to get together.

I thought the Senator's best point today was when Timmeh challenged him on the withdrawal and Kerry responded that the Admin said that goal was to get 272,000 Iraqi security forces trained. We have, by the Admin's count, 243,000 trained. Bush said, 'They stand up, we stand down.' With that many Iraqis supposedly trained, why aren't we sending US troops home. It begs the question on two sides: if this is true, send the troops home. If this is not true, then who is lying and what the hell are we actually accomplishing over there are 3 years and billions and billions of dollars? Nice move.

17. Iraq Sovereignty, it's their country
I've been saying this for nearly a year. It's their country, we need to give it to them. That's what the left has been saying since 2003, let them fight their own civil war, if that's what they want. Why is this now wrong since Kerry said it? That's all Kerry is saying, they need to step up and take over their country so troops can come home. Bush isn't saying that he will bring all the troops home, he's making permanent bases. He's said the NEXT President will have to deal with withdrawal from Iraq. I really hate when people allow him to get away with his lies.

He said he supports censure as a method to uncover more of what Bush has done. That isn't letting him off the hook. We don't need 2006 to be about whether Democrats are going to impeach Bush or not, we'll lose.

7. Good To See
Good to see Dems finally rallying around Kerry.

He spoke the truth in the campaign and the media ignored it.

There job is to lie for Bush.

Best bumper sticker I saw recently.

I support the Vets. I voted for one.

10. "Many Heed His Call" ???
the response from the Democratic Party (i'm talking about elected Democrats and Party "big-wigs") has been almost non-existent ... outside of a very few, like Hart, Feingold, Hayden and Cleland, i've seen no movement from the Party at all ...

how tragic is that ???????????????????????

I think that outcome would likely favor Senator Kerry.

Massachusetts Dems have it pretty good with two fine folks representing them in the U.S. Senate.

23. I think most Dems are in agreement with Kerry on the foundations here.
Edited on Mon Apr-10-06 01:06 AM by Clarkie1
The administration is not using enough leverage to get the majority Shia to form an inclusive government, and they are more likely to take us seriously if they don't take our presence there for granted. Kerry's plan is one way to approach the problem.

Of course, it's all academic at this point, since we aren't the ones who's job it is to make the plans and set the policy. Still, the more Democratic ideas out there the better...it shows that Democrats have leaders who are able to think strategically and creatively, whereas the Republicans have no plan at all. It's not important at this time that all Democrats be in agreement of the details of this plan or that plan, since none of our plans are going to be enacted anyway. The important thing is that the American people see we are a party of alternative ideas, and more sensible approaches.

And we can at least hope against all odds that the administration will do SOMETHING to change the course they are on, even if they don't give us the credit for planting new ideas in their heads.

24. I like Kerry, He's massively intelligent and competent but he can't win
He comes across as "sort of" aloof and "sort of" uninspired about the common man. The middle class in my opinion has about had it with the Repugs and any Democrat or moderate repugnucklehead that caters to the common working man and the middle class of the country WILL win. Speak clearly , unfortunately "W" has proved that voters want a dumbed down President that a good cold Bud goes down with. We nee a smart enough person like "Bubba" Clinton that is probably the most intelligent Pres in many years but he knew how to connect to the common working man and woman. Where is that candidate and who will back them so they are not in the pocket of Big business, special interests, and lobbyists? I don't see one. These polls that say people favor dem control of congress by as many as 17 points are false as well. The Repugs are taking home the bacon to buy the votes of their people. Money for roads, services, and grand new buildings, bridges, etc to their communities, hospitals and schools. It's hard to win when you control nothing in the Federal Govt. Is there hope? YES! More implosions from these liars and crooks running the show now, and that elusive candidate to galvanize the Dems to connect to the middle class moderates so strong that we can beat gay marriage and abortion debate which will get the repug voters out to vote. So what do we do , stand do nothing and watch the liars keep shooting themselves in both feet, ankles and legs, or do we come up with real plans for the major problems facing the country and have a national strategy to express that message in every race from a small district in Georgia to Senate races in large states, and have the same agenda espoused by our nominee. One giant party all saying the exact same things over and over again with bright candidates who must connect with the average John's and Jane's and yes Bubba's of this land. Then and only then do we have a snowball's chance in hell to control even one branch of tis so called government. No sort of and and and,and the the the Ike of Sen. Kerry
