Keep in mind that most of the folks who live in LV (I'm one of them) don't like the idea of this, or any other big boom at the NTS. But we're the state and the NTS is FEDERAL land -- we have no control over what they do there, in the end.

All that you might accomplish, assuming you could convince enough people to forgo their drinkin', gamblin' and whorin', would be to make a smallish dent in the casino profits and a larger dent in the pocketbooks of people who live and work here.

9. Not if the boycott is big enough. Here's an example of success...

Years ago my sister threatened to boycott products advertised in TV stations that she frequented and which were refusing to carry captioning for the deaf (someone in my family is deaf). She gathered a group of people who were disgruntled that there was no captioning. All wrote the stations and wrote the sponsors about their embarking on a boycott of the station and the sponsors' products. Within about 6 months, all these stations had captioning for the deaf. (And it's not cheap!) Boycotting works if it's planned and well done. Corporations are money whores. They'll do anything for money.

10. True, corporations are profit driven -- but

if a boycott managed to shut down the Strip it wouldn't have any effect of what the Feds do at the NTS. Most of the hotel-casinos (not all) actually contribute far more to the Democrats than the Republicans -- they're not part of Bush's base in any way that would make this administration heed their complaints.

Besides, when did Las Vegas become responsible for stopping this test? Because the federal government decided the Nevada desert was a good place to blow things up? They blow things up in New Mexico, too.

A better idea would be a concerted effort, on the part of the American people, to push for debate on the topic in Congress. Would it stop it? Perhaps not, but it would put a crimp in any Bushco plans to figure out how to test NUKES again.
