Time gap between results
At 8:05 p.m., Acting Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley plans to post the results of the largest chunk of absentee ballots. Given the above scenario, Harkey will then spend the next 2-1/2 hours wondering whether she has a big enough margin in absentees to win, while Harman will spend those same long minutes wondering whether he'll be able to catch up.
Then at 10:30 p.m., Kelley plans to post the first batch of precinct results.
The reason for the big time gap? A return to paper ballots. That's because of a new requirement of a paper trail for all electronic ballots cast - the county hasn't gotten that system entirely up and running yet but should have it ready for the June primary.
