Another reason to stop illegal immigration: Health risks
http://www.fairus.org/site/PageServer?pagename=iic_immigrationissuecenters64bf

The impact of immigration on our public health is often overlooked. Although millions of visitors for tourism and business come every year, the foreign population of special concern is illegal residents, who come most often from countries with endemic health problems and less developed health care. They are of greatest consequence because they are responsible for a disproportionate share of serious public health problems, are living among us for extended periods of time, and often are dependent on U.S. health care services.

Public Health Risks

Because illegal immigrants, unlike those who are legally admitted for permanent residence, undergo no medical screening to assure that they are not bearing contagious diseases, the rapidly swelling population of illegal aliens in our country has also set off a resurgence of contagious diseases that had been totally or nearly eradicated by our public health system.

According to Dr. Laurence Nickey, director of the El Paso heath district “Contagious diseases that are generally considered to have been controlled in the United States are readily evident along the border ... The incidence of tuberculosis in El Paso County is twice that of the U.S. rate. Dr. Nickey also states that leprosy, which is considered by most Americans to be a disease of the Third World, is readily evident along the U.S.-Mexico border and that dysentery is several times the U.S. rate ... People have come to the border for economic opportunities, but the necessary sewage treatment facilities, public water systems, environmental enforcement, and medical care have not been made available to them, causing a severe risk to health and well being of people on both sides of the border.”1

“The pork tapeworm, which thrives in Latin America and Mexico, is showing up along the U.S. border, threatening to ravage victims with symptoms ranging from seizures to death. ... The same underclass has migrated north to find jobs on the border, bringing the parasite and the sickness—cysticercosis—its eggs can cause. Cysts that form around the larvae usually lodge in the brain and destroy tissue, causing hallucinations, speech and vision problems, severe headaches, strokes, epileptic seizures, and in rare cases death.”

The problem, however, is not confined to the border region, as illegal immigrants have rapidly spread across the country into many new economic sectors such as food processing, construction, and hospitality services.

Typhoid struck Silver Spring, Maryland, in 1992 when an immigrant from the Third World (who had been working in food service in the United States for almost two years) transmitted the bacteria through food at the McDonald’s where she worked. River blindness, malaria, and guinea worm, have all been brought to Northern Virginia by immigration.3

"By default, we grant health passes to illegal aliens. Yet many illegal aliens harbor fatal diseases that American medicine fought and vanquished long ago, such as drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio, dengue, and Chagas disease."

“What is unseen is their (illegal aliens’) free medical care that has degraded and closed some of America’s finest emergency medical facilities, and caused hospital bankruptcies: 84 California hospitals are closing their doors.”

—Madeleine Peiner Cosman, Ph.D., Esq. “Illegal Aliens and American Medicine,” Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons, Spring 2005

Contrary to common belief, tuberculosis (TB) has not been wiped out in the United States, mostly due to illegal migration. In 1995, there was an outbreak of TB in an Alexandria high school, when 36 high-school students caught the disease from a foreign student.4 The four greatest immigrant magnet states have over half the TB cases in the U.S.5 In 1992, 27 percent of the TB cases in the United States were among the foreign-born; in California, it was 61 percent of the cases; in Hawaii, 83 percent; and in Washington state, 46 percent. The Queens, New York, health department attributed 81 percent of new TB cases in 2001 to immigrants.

Costs of Medical Care

Immigrants are often uninsured and underinsured. Forty-three percent of noncitizens under 65 have no health insurance. That means there are 9.4 million uninsured immigrants, a majority of whom are in the country illegally, constituting 15 percent of the total uninsured in the nation in the mid-1990s.6 The cost of the medical care of these uninsured immigrants is passed onto the taxpayer, and strains the financial stability of the health care community.

Another problem is immigrants’ use of hospital and emergency services rather than preventative medical care. For example, utilization rate of hospitals and clinics by illegal aliens (29 percent) is more than twice the rate of the overall U.S. population (11 percent).7

As a result, the costs of medical care for immigrants are staggering. The estimated cost of unreimbursed medical care in 2004 in California was about $1.4 billion per year. In Texas, the estimated cost was about $.85 billion, and in Arizona the comparable estimate was $.4 billion per year.8

One of the frequent costs to U.S. taxpayers is delivery of babies to illegal alien mothers. A California study put the number of these anchor baby deliveries in the state in 1994 at 74,987, at a cost of $215 million. At that time, those births constituted 36 percent of all Medi-Cal births, and they have grown now to substantially more than half or the annual Medi-Cal budget. In 2003, 70 percent of the 2,300 babies born in San Joaquin General Hospital’s maternity ward were anchor babies. Medical in 2003 had 760,000 illegal alien beneficiaries, up from 2002, when there were 470,000.

May be if a few Corp. people got A good case of TB or some of these worm thing? But then Congress and Corp. President have health ins. Does Congress really think that terrorists are not coming in the same way?

17. Yes, health testing was done at Ellis Island.
Obvious disease was almost the only way to get rejected--for whites. Set up equally lenient immigration centers along the Border & your health worries would have no basis at all.

Of course, the "Terror!" excuse has worked well for Bush & his supporters.

2. We've been here before
This was when we "legitimized" eugenics and racism based on presumed biological differences. Eugenics started with disability, then went to immigration policy, and finally to citizens who were not white. There were mass forced sterilizations, immigration restrictions, and marriage restrictions.
Let's not forget this history and the roads they travelled.

"Congress passed America's first naturalization law in 1790. It limited the privilege of US citizenship to "free white persons." About a century later, immigration laws began to restrict who could enter the country. The 1882 Act to Regulate Immigration prohibited entry to "any person unable to take care of himself or herself without becoming a public charge". The law was designed to exclude immigrants whose undesirable conditions might prove costly to society – including convicted criminals, the poor, and the mentally ill. In that same year, the Chinese Exclusion Act was the first measure to specifically target immigrants by race or ethnicity.

In the 1890's the federal government assumed sole jurisdiction to monitor immigration, a task that had previously been delegated by contract to states with port cities. The government built a depot on Ellis Island in New York Harbor, through which all immigrants were to be processed. Outbreaks of smallpox, typhus and cholera in New York between 1882 and 1892, heightened concern about the possibility of alien contagion prompted the adoption of individual health inspections for each arriving immigrant – especially for the contagious eye disease trachoma."

6. Truth in Advertising: About "FAIR"
Edited on Tue Apr-11-06 07:56 AM by mcscajun
(Emphasis mine)

The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) is an immigration reduction organization in the United States, founded in 1979 by John Tanton.

FAIR promotes policies to improve border security and stop illegal immigration, and to reduce legal immigration into the United States to around 300,000 people a year. FAIR's policy studies emphasize the environmental, economic, and social consequences of mass immigration.

FAIR's policy rhetoric and analysis have often been characterized as anti-immigrant, inflammatory, and partisan. For example, an article in the June 2004 issue of its monthly publication, Immigration Report, is titled "Democrats offer 'No Illegal Immigrant Left Behind' Act." In the article, FAIR writes that the number of people who would receive amnesty under the proposed bill, called the SOLVE Act, would "likely run into the tens of millions," adding that "untold millions" would be able to procure fraudulent documents which would result in an "incalculable" number of family members entering the United States legally.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federation_for_American_Immigration_Reform

Tanton himself, though usually identified as a conservationist, counts Wayne Lutton, a man who has shown little discomfort in the company of outright racists, as collaborator and employee.

Moreover, Tanton was forced out of the leadership of U.S. English because of a paper he wrote for a private study group involved with the campaign for an English-only law in Arizona. In that paper, he employs explicity racist references when he writes, "Will the present majority peaceably hand over its political power to a group that is simply more fertile? As Whites see their power and control over their lives declining, will they simply go quietly into the night? Or will there be an explosion? ... Perhaps this is the first instance in which those with their pants up are going to get caught by those with their pants down?"

FAIR and the Pioneer Fund

FAIR has received significant financial support from white supremecist sources. Since its founding, FAIR has received more than $1 million from the notorious racist foundation, the Pioneer Fund.

Founding in 1937 to further the cause of purifying the American gene pool by encouraging the descendants of white colonists to procreate, the Pioneer Fund has become a centerpiece in keeping scientific racism alive through allocating grants for pseudo-academic studies. The Pioneer Fund is infamous not only for its funding of classic racist eugenics research in the pre-World War II era, but also for continued financial support for racial segregation and racist science.

So why exactly did you bring this "FAIR" drivel here to DU?

- I got a letter from my son's school last year that there was an outbreak of WHOOPING COUGH in his school! I have NEVER known of anyone getting whooping cough in my lifetime and I have children ranging in age from 14 to 27. Most children receive an immunization for it early in their life.

His middle-school has a good number of Latinos. Wonder what the next disease will be????

9. Many "native-born" American children haven't had immunization.
Due to the fear-mongering going on both on and off the Internet over the "horrors" associated with vaccination. Some religious and fundamentalist groups lead the charge, as usual when anti-scientific efforts go on.

(Emphasis in what follows is mine.)
Current federal recommendations include 20 injections in a child's first 18 months and several other immunizations over the next 10 to 15 years to protect against 11 diseases. Despite a lack of scientific evidence supporting their concerns, "One in four parents of children under 6 believes children's immune systems could be weakened by too many vaccines, says Bruce Gellin of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, "and almost as many believe that children get more immunizations than are good for them." Gellin, who is also executive director of the National Network for Immunization Information in Alexandria, Va., recently surveyed 1,600 parents with young children.

(snip)

Gregg Burgess, a parent of two in Sterling, Va., hasn't immunized his two boys. He feels that the number of vaccines given kids these days can cause their immune systems to get "screwed up," perhaps resulting in autism and autoimmune disorders like diabetes. Burgess is a board member of the National Vaccine Information Center, an anti-vaccine group that claims there isn't enough evidence to demonstrate the safety of vaccines.

If parents' fears over vaccine safety rise, public health officials worry that immunization rates will drop. Such a decline would naturally lead to more cases of disease among the unvaccinated children. Because most vaccines don't provide complete protection against disease in every child, however, even vaccinated children would become more vulnerable if vaccination rates drop, scientists predict.

In Colorado, an unusually large contingent of parents holds religious or philosophical objections to vaccination. Among that state's school-age kids, 1.4 percent--twice the national average--remain unvaccinated. A study in the Dec. 27, 2000 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION reported that unvaccinated children were more than 20 times as likely as vaccinated children to develop measles and almost 6 times as likely to develop pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

11. How about actual facts?
Also, whooping cough infections tend to run on a 2-5 year cycle, and 2004 could be a high point in the cycle.

Like flu viruses, the bacterium is highly contagious and tends to pass quickly from person to person through coughing and sneezing. If increasing numbers of individuals have the illness, then the risk of infection increases in the general population.

Many young children are vaccinated against whooping cough with the pertussis vaccine. However, the vaccine is only approved for children under seven years of age. Antibody-mediated immunity wanes in approximately ten years, leaving older individuals more susceptible to the disease. Adults get infected, often to a lesser degree, but they are still able to spread the disease to unimmunized children.
http://textbookofbacteriology.net/pertussis.html

And when I googled "whooping cough outbreak immigrants" most of what came up was RW and anti-immigration sites. Is that the kind of company you keep?

31.  The school requires immunization -
- and these are middle school children age 11-14, still within range of being effectively immunized based upon your post.

As far as it being a situation where it was a high point in the cycle, none of my friends who have children in different middle schools in the same county received the letter. I have had children in this public school system since 1985 and it is the very first time I've ever received a letter stating that there was an outbreak of any disease where immunization is required by the school.

While I appreciate your google for more information, it is irrelevant in this matter as I am relaying an actual experience and not a theory. It has nothing to do with what company I keep as the circumstances are based upon fact and not politics.

Anyone who thinks that immigrants cannot bring disease might want to bone up on their history and check out the experience of native American's vs. European smallpox. While it may not be PC, I prefer to believe what I actually see and experience firsthand instead of forming an opinion based upon political opinion and rhetoric.

30. That anecdotal information proves nothing
For your education, I looked up some actual facts for you so you don't continue posting misinformation.

Apparently, you do not know that the Mexican immunization rate EXCEEDS the U.S.

Mexico's paternalistic approach has led to a 96% vaccination rate for children ages 1 to 4, compared with 79% of American 2-year-olds.
Immunization campaigns are run three times a year, done with great fanfare. In addition, uniformed brigades of nurses keep careful watch over vaccination rates, neighborhood by neighborhood.
Babies are given their first immunizations - against polio and tuberculosis - in the hospital right after birth. They also receive a government-issued National Vaccination Record, on which the vaccines they receive throughout their lives will be tallied. The vaccine record must be presented in order to enter school, to get passports or other identification papers and even to get some jobs and loans. Losing the record is not usually a problem, because the same information is recorded with the federal government and can be replaced.
http://www.vaccinationnews.com/DailyNews/December2002/MexicoMore22.htm

Health conditions vary significantly on different sides of the border, as is evident in vaccination rates. On the U.S. side, an estimated 70 percent of children under 3 are vaccinated, below the U.S. national rate of 79 percent (as of 2003). In contrast, Mexican border states have higher coverage rates than the country as a whole, with 97 percent of children under 1 year vaccinated.
http://www.paho.org/English/DD/PIN/ptoday15_nov04.htm

If anything, Mexico should be worried that unvaccinated AMERICANS will be bringing diseases there. But, I guess any outbreaks will be limited since they have been so successful with their vaccination program.
