Why is the CA-50 election an open primary?

Is this the system now used in California house races? I'm just a little confused, because I can't remember it even being done this way before. I always remember all Calif. House races (incl. special elections) being the party primaries followed by a special election between the nominees.

3. question about polling places

I was doing some phone banking last night for this race. Part of the phone call was to remind people of their polling place. Some of the polling places were in people's garages. Are polling places really in garages?

in schools, in community centers. It's wherever they can find space.

It probably isn't all that uncommon in heavily populated areas where they have a brazillion precincts.

5. People's garages are very common in CA

When I first moved here and got my polling place notice I thought it was strange that I would be voting at an automotive garage and discovered that it was even stranger, that I was voting in the garage attached to someone's house. In every other place I've lived the polling places were municipal facilities like schools, public auditoriums, etc.

6. I live in CA-50 and I voted in a garage this morning.

They had the voting booths set up right next to a bunch of garden implements, a lawnmower, and sprinkler. There was something oddly folksy about it.

I have voted in my neighbor's garage for 17 years. I love it!
