April 11 (Bloomberg) -- China made several concessions to U.S. trade demands today, agreeing to lift its ban on U.S. beef imports, open up its telecommunications and medical-devices market to competition and crack down on software piracy.
``There are no home runs here,'' said Myron Brilliant, vice president for Asian affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. ``But if you get a lot of singles, you can score some runs.''
Chinese Vice Premier Wu Yi, U.S. Trade Representative Rob Portman and U.S. Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez made the announcement after a daylong summit in Washington. The annual trade meeting was an opportunity for the two nations to dampen tensions over their record $202 billion trade gap before President Hu Jintao visits President George W. Bush on April 20.
``Numbers will ultimately tell the story,'' as to whether there is progress on the promises made today, Gutierrez said at a joint press conference with Wu and Portman.
The $285 billion trade relationship between the U.S. and China has grown contentious because of China's currency and market access policies. The need to resolve those and other differences has become more important as China is now the second-largest foreign holder of U.S. debt and is likely to pass Mexico this year as the second-largest U.S. trading partner.
