Cheney booed throwing out first pitch at baseball game

Cheney booed throwing out first pitch at baseball game

Tue Apr 11, 5:22 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Vice President Dick Cheney received a less than warm welcome when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a Washington Nationals baseball game.

Cheney was greeted mainly with boos and some cheers as he stepped onto the field and threw a ball to Nationals' catcher Brian Schneider at the team's opening home game at RFK stadium, a short drive from the White House.

Wearing a bright red Nationals jacket, Cheney smiled throughout the short ceremony and waved to the crowd as he made his way off the field. His toss was low, bouncing in the dirt before being scooped up by Schneider.

1. He didn't throw a beanball?
(a pitch that strikes the batters head - for you non-baseball types)

2. LOVE it.
It reminds me of Glenn Close in the last scene of Dangerous Liasons.

3. Mets third baseman tries to shrug it off
from usatoday's coverage:

New York third baseman David Wright said he was thrilled to meet Cheney and shrugged off the booing.

"When you've got 50% of America that's Republican, 50% that's Democrat, you're probably going to get mixed reviews," Wright said.

No... by this logic there should be an even mix of cheers and boos any time a politician appears in public. The fact is, when the Pres or VP does something ceremonial like throwing out a first pitch, you don't hear boos at all unless the individual is vastly unpopular.

4. Watching sports for as long as I have
It should be noted that boo's are easier to hear than cheers. If 25% of the crowd was booing, it would probably sound like an even mix.

That said, sports fans (demographically) tend to fall more to the right, and there is a sizable number of people who cheer the office, not the office holder. If that makes any sense.

And also, remember how blue Washington is.

7. Cheney's 18% approval rating might have been a factor too
You're patially right though - people who can afford to go to MLB games these days tend to be part of Cheny's base - haves and have-mores.

6. Did he ride around the field in a big SUV, like when he hunts?

8. They should have booed
Cheney is one of the most unpopular people in the US, and everything he's done, he deserves to be booed. It would have been more boos, if the common person in DC was at the game, but all those rich, Repukies were probably there 'cause they can afford it.

9. And he had three Iraq veterans out on the field as props
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 10:22 AM by Old Broad
to shield him from any possible outburst from the fans. Too bad it didn't work.

In today's Newsday, a Long Island paper, they had a pic of the three veterans out
there with Cheney. One was on crutches. No one was smiling.

The online edition has only the pic of Cheney attempting to fling the ball toward the
home plate. They cut out the three veterans next to him. But the full pic was in
the print edition this morning.
