‘No-fly’ list delays Marine's Iraq homecoming
Minnesota reservist detained after being identified as possible terrorist

Updated: 11:06 a.m. ET April 12, 2006

MINNEAPOLIS - A Minnesota reservist who spent the past eight months in Iraq was told he couldn't board a plane to Minneapolis because his name appeared on a "no-fly" list as a possible terrorist.

Marine Staff Sgt. Daniel Brown, who was in uniform and returning from the war with 26 other Marine military police reservists, was delayed briefly in Los Angeles until the issue was cleared up.

The other reservists arrived at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport as scheduled, but instead of immediately meeting their families, they waited on a bus for Brown.

"We don't leave anybody behind," said Marine 1st Sgt. Drew Benson. "We start together, and we finish together."

Brown arrived more than an hour later.

"A guy goes over and serves his country fighting for eight or nine months, and then we come home and put up with this crap?" Brown told the St. Paul Pioneer Press upon arrival.

1. mix up in a name, "Dan Brown", didn't he write Davinci Code?
this is just wrong, though I would count DavinciCode Dan Brown as questionable.

2. There's a guy I work with who's on the no-fly list.
We're both air traffic controllers.

:wtf:

7. That is completely absurd. You know what would be interesting...
Edited on Wed Apr-12-06 10:24 PM by file83
...would be to create a website where people could post their names when they discover they are on the no-fly list.

Then people would start to get an idea of how totally USELESS the list is.

14. The worst part is that you don't find out until you try to fly.
They won't tell you in advance. Imagine having a family vacation planned, going to the airport, and being told that you can't board the plane.

Well, at least it's making me safer...

13. Nope.
He has a Secret security clearance. He has had an FBI background check. He has had a psychological profile. He can tell Air Force One to fly.

But he's on the no-fly list.

We all think it's kinda funny (well, except him).

17. Post #16 gives the reason for the do-not-fly status.
Yes, it's still radically wrong.

11. That is too bizarre.
The no-fly list is such a pathetic joke. So is airport security. Too little emphasis on the biggest threats and too much on the weakest ones.

16. Apparently, there's a guy with his same name (it's a very common name)
with the same birthday that has outstanding warrants against him. They have different descriptions and different social security numbers, but my co-worker's efforts to clear up the situation have been uncuccessful so far (over the last 6-8 months or so).

Young Officers Leaving Army at a High Rate
By THOM SHANKER
Published: April 10, 2006

WASHINGTON, April 9 — Young Army officers, including growing numbers of captains who leave as soon as their initial commitment is fulfilled, are bailing out of active-duty service at rates that have alarmed senior officers. Last year, more than a third of the West Point class of 2000 left active duty at the earliest possible moment, after completing their five-year obligation.

5. "Daniel Brown" - the same name as the "DaVinci Code" author?
...Time for a Congressional inquery.

This is absolutely ridiculous - "Daniel Brown" is about as mainstream a name as they come. How many "Daniel Browns" are there in the United States? There must be 10's of thousands of Dan Browns.

This no-fly list is only good for harassing law abiding citizens. How many ACTUAL terrorists has the "no-fly" list really caught?
