The smearing of Conyers is just like

the smearing of Scott Ritter

the smearing of Bill Clinton

the smearing of Joe Wilson

the smearing of John Kerry

the smearing of Ward Churchill

the smearing of Cynthia McKinney

the smearing of .... well you get the point.

But I guarantee you there will be somebody here repeating those smears at some point.

Just like they have done with all the rest.

I say let the story die because nobody out on TV land really gives a shit if Conyers had his dog walked.

We have to push the issues that matter not stew over smear stories that have no legs.

5. Agree
If CNN, MS/NBC, ABC, CBS, et al aren't able to investigate a government about to commit nuclear atrocity and choose to run with this instead then they are corroborators in the crime. Each and every CEO/News Director of these organizations should be tried along with the the rest of the war criminals. Faux - well what's the point?

6. Cleland was shamelessly attacked ... on Conyers
I'd like to see a bit of evidence before screaming "foul." If these allegations from former staffers surfaced for any significant Republican congressional leader we would be calling for their head and giving the presumption of truth to the charges. Ethical violations are unwarranted regardless of the party, or politics, of the prospective offender.

9. agree with you
love conyers, but we all need to be subjective, supportive but subjective. I believe there is no real truth behind it, just disgruntled workers.

I agree. I still cringe thinking about what they did to Cleland...ugh, now it's going to bother me all over again.

Edit for spelling

7. These smears suck
but point out that there can be NO lapse in integrity as a public servant. Ever. Not that that is particularly realistic, but that's the standard that will prevent this kind of crap from being exploited. People who exploit the kind of information like this on Conyers will stoop to any level.

8. Notice that the smearing is backfiring
Ward Churchill got about two weeks' coverage. Most of the articles I read in the MSM were incomprehensible, because the editors just assumed that the whole audience knew who and what was involved -- but they didn't. Nor did they care.

Cynthia McKinney got a week. Maybe less. In the end, it came down to the equivalent two neighbors fighting over an episode of misbehavior by one of the local kids. The upset neighbor wanted to do the spanking, but the mom said that it was HER job -- in this case, the liberals, African-Americans, and McKinney's constituents. (This isn't to say that CM is a brat who needs a spanking. That's how the story spun -- out of control and away from its Rovista spinmeisters. No one took it seriously, and the whole "ironic-double-reverse-discrimination-and-blacks-are-bigots-too" cock-and-bull story is also on its last legs.)

Scott Ritter's smearing got no coverage except in the political-junkies' press (of which, yes, DU is a part). Even so, that may have kept the right from taking more heat. The "case" against Ritter was laughable, and was proven to be a lie within a few days. If it had been a cause celebre, it would have backfired badly. (I mean, accusing him of pedophilia? What is this -- the Internet?)

As for the smearing of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, Al Gore, and John Kerry -- four times burned, forever shy.

The Republican Party is through. The name, the legal charter, and the loyalists may remain, but the screech-monkey element is enjoying its last few moments of reflected light. Après Bush, le Deluge.

13. I can see why it's backfiring... the news of the "gentleman's oath"
.....that congressional members adopted years ago is a BIGGER story!

There's no telling what kind of unethical behavior goes on that never gets out because of that disgraceful pact that they took!!

15. exactly

only total political junkies like us even know about it.

You approach someone on the street and ask about this and I guarantee you they will stare at you like you were some kind of alien from Mars.

11. Hopefully not like DeLay - who was guilty.
I'm withholding judgement to see if its true. If it is he has abused workers which should offend any populist who cares about workers or women's rights.

16. Only two things left that suprise me when discussing this administration.
1. How they manage to still hold on to a small population of folks who will defend every action of this President.

2. Those of us who can still be amazed at the lengths this White House will go to discredit a dissenting voice.
