Field & Stream magazine: Bush is destroying hunting and fishing
http://www.fieldandstream.com/fieldstream/columnists/conservation/article/0,13199,489794,00.html

Rod and gun in hand, and backing the Second Amendment right to own firearms, President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney have won the hearts of America’s sportsmen. Yet the two men have failed to protect outdoor sports on the nation’s public lands. With deep ties to the oil and gas industry, Bush and Cheney have unleashed a national energy plan that has begun to destroy hunting and fishing on millions of federal acres throughout the West, setting back effective wildlife management for decades to come.

In his second week in office, President Bush convened a National Energy Policy Development Group, chaired by Vice President Cheney. Meeting with representatives of the energy industry behind closed doors, it eventually released a National Energy Policy, the goal of which was to “expedite permits and coordinate federal, state, and local actions necessary for energy-related project approvals on a national basis.”

Put into practice through a series of executive orders, the policy has prioritized drilling over other uses on federal lands, while relegating long-standing conservation mandates from the 1960s and ’70s to the back burner. For example, in Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Colorado, and New Mexico, the Bureau of Land Management has approved over 75 percent of the energy industry’s applications for exemptions to work in critical winter range, heretofore closed to protect wildlife—sage grouse, mule deer, and pronghorns, in particular (the Federal Land Policy Management Act of 1976 gave agencies the means to close critical habitat). The BLM has also continued to issue drilling leases while in the process of writing new resource management plans that still await public comment. In addition, the Bush administration is working hard to eliminate Wilderness Study areas—set aside for their scenic value as well as their importance to wildlife. Most disturbingly, Congress is now debating a national energy bill that would codify the policy, making it the law of the land rather than an executive order. Subsequent administrations—be they Republican or Democratic—would be unable to institute a more balanced management plan for our western lands without resorting to new congressional legislation.

The results of these actions—billed as promoting national energy security—have begun to turn vast tracts of the western United States into industrial landscapes. The winners are the energy companies, which have been able to acquire their leases for as little as $2 per acre. The casualties are big game, upland birds, cold- and warmwater fisheries, the traditional interests of hunters and anglers, and the economic welfare of communities whose livelihoods are based on outdoor recreation and ranching.

14. I think it surprises non-evil Republicans.
Edited on Thu Apr-13-06 03:06 PM by sofa king
There are a few left. Most of them are pretty stupid to begin with, so they don't catch on easily even when the truth is not intentionally obscured. When the Department of the Interior plays little games like including golf course water hazards as wetlands in order to conceal the destruction of half a million acres of swamp, non-evil Republicans are hopelessly confused.

Worse than that, non-evil Republicans are becoming evil, not because they want to destroy the environment, but because they refuse to believe that they are working twenty-four-seven in the service of evil, despite all the warnings, despite all the evidence, despite what they can see with their own eyes. Soon they will be searching for explanations beyond that of "Allah/Jesus/Magical Sky Pixie wills it."

When it's no longer possible to deny the catastrophe that has overtaken America, they will be among the angriest of former Americans, and they'll be looking for any excuse to deny their own culpability.

But they'll still be stupid, and when stupidity once again becomes a selectable evolutionary trait, they'll be among the first to be swept from the scene.

18. That "water hazard" story is amazing.
Truly astounding.

Next thing you know, they'll be including swimming pools and sewage settling ponds.

Say goodbye to wildlife unless these fuckers are thrown out and soon.

It may already be too late.

32. The enormous irony of DU and Freepers.
Liberals fighting for open borders for immigrants and Freepers fighting for free market domestic oil. Yet it's the fishermen, hunters and environmentalist in them that will eventually see that one hand is chopping up the other.

30. This will upset my dad.
He tunes out when I talk about stuff like this, but if it's in Field & Stream he'll pay attention to it. Huntin' and fishin' is my father's life and he loves the land, but he's also a Republican and he gets so upset about the huge gap between what W promised and what's really happened.

They've always been strong advocates of good management practices.

sounds like an echo of the Nader Campaign. I believe no one cares more about the environment than Al Gore, to say they were going to get screwed either way was a subliminal endorsement of Bush.

23. Thanks for pointing that out.
While I had other reasons to vote Gore, I really didn't pick up on that possibility. Yes that was the period of my subscription.

The thing is, in general, without regard to specific candidates, the screwd either way thesis holds water. I've seen it over and over, gun rights pitted against the environment.

7. And this from the Wyoming crowd
When are they going to wake up and see that he sold them all out?

Despite our dismay at seeing western landscapes transformed in this way, none of us—hunter, angler, wildlife watcher—can discount the need for energy. We use it in our vehicles; we use it to heat our homes and cook our meals. Clearly, something must be done to secure supplies. But only 3 percent of the world’s oil and natural gas lies under domestic soils, while we used 25 percent of the global total in 2002. In other words, our energy security can never result from more drilling in our public wildernesses. Of course, the worldwide quest for fuel damages the environment wherever it is unleashed. As Doug Grann, the president and CEO of Wildlife Forever, the conservation arm of the North American Hunting and Fishing Club, points out, we cannot sacrifice the wildlife and wild country of this planet while doing nothing to develop alternative fuels and improving the fuel efficiency of our cars, factories, and homes.

Thanks for posting this. I'll send the article on.

The uber-example being Teddy Roo.

BTW did you know that most state DNR depts are funded by excise taxes on hunting and fishing products? These are the people who are the first line in enviormental law enforcement.

15. That is what is called short-sightedness.
If these guys had not been so worried about losing their guns and given it some thought, they would have realized that while protecting their "right to bear arms", Bush was taking away every other right they had, including the "pursuit of happiness", if that is what hunting and fishing meant to them.

In some ways they were just as ignorant and gullible as the religious zealots who have been hoodwinked by the BFEE.

i interpret "sportsmen for bush" as "gun nuts for shooting stuff".

"sportsmen for bush" makes as much sense as "sheep for wolves" or "mice for cats". whenever i see one of those bumper stickers i think the owner must be a total rube.

38. Check this out, concerning Poppy Bush & killing lions for fun:
It's an older article, but like father like son, Asshole Bush Sr does not enjoy seeing endangered species protected...

snip:

"You might call the lions of southern Africa potential Bush meat. The former American president, George Bush senior, and his old Gulf War ally, General "Stormin' Norman" Schwarzkopf, are pleading with the government of Botswana to be allowed to revive their old alliance, this time in pursuit of Africa's endangered big cats.

Mr Bush is among prominent members of Safari Club International (SCI) who have written to the Botswanan authorities asking them to lift a ban slapped on trophy hunting of lions in February.

Rich Americans, Europeans and Japanese pay about £20,000 a time to kill a lion in Botswana. The government usually permits the shooting of about 50 lions a year by trophy hunters but decided to impose the ban in part because American shooters favour lions with thick manes for their walls, leading to a disproportionate killing of mature males.

Tales of horrendous suffering by the animals abound. Some supposed hunters are so inexpert with guns that they take a dozen shots to kill a lion."
