But one thing to remember is this: ZERO post-conflict US casualties in post-war Germany. Zero. Same with Japan.

It's over 2,000 in Iraq, given that the mission was "accomplished" after three weeks.

Also 400,000 US soldiers were killed in the four years they fought in WWII.

But I agree with what one poster said earlier: there really is no comparison.

do you really think that? If that's the case then Iraq can be compared to anything, right? The question is whether or not there are enough similarities to make it an accurate comparison - or one worth considering. I think they are two incredibly different events. When we talk about 'comparing Iraq to X' we mean it as a way of showing similarities, like when people talk about Iraq being like Vietnam because there is no end in sight and there are doubts about the way the country was led into the situation in the first place (Tonkin Gulf vs. WMD claims).

We don't think of these 'comparisons' in the terms of "everything that's different about them." Your model would apply to every war in history as just a basic 'comparison', but that's not what the original discussion meant.

All of WWII took less time than we've been fucking around in Iraq.
