117. Think Feingold should read this thread

I got Sen. Feingold 100% followed by Kerry, then Biden.
I am a bit surprised by this, but in some ways not so much. I can remember watching him on C-Span running in his first race for the Senate. They were on the trail with him and I thought to myself, "This guy is someone to watch in the future if he can make it". Since then I have had mixed feelings toward him on various issues but when he stood up and called for a censure of Bush I remembered why I liked him all those years ago. The big question for me is , can he win? I'm not so sure. He's got as good a shot as any Dem so far I guess. I'm still waiting for the Dems to put out the Big Vision Thing for 08. Better be a great vision!

The ideological differences are more worth our consideration.

In the primaries, I'll go with preferred Democrats. I'll support the ticket against the GOP, even if it's Hagel for their side, even if he is not quite as bad as McCain and Frist. I still am not hogwild about Hagel. And I don't consider him 'blue.'

On the list of each "candidate" with his or her positions, http://selectsmart.com/08frontrunners.html they have Clark as strongly supporting no time line for withdrawal. Well, that's true as far as it goes, but if I recall, the question further modified that response with the words "stay the course," which definitely NOT Clark's position. And for the opposite response, plan now to redeploy US forces, they show Clark as strong opposed, and that's definitely not true as well. He has proposed redeploying, altho not out of theater, and most certainly wants to plan for it, since he has said the window will close soon.

Anyway, I answered that question "neither," gave it a high priority, and I still came out with Clark as my #1 with 100%. So I'm really not sure what's up with that.

74. The accuracy is lacking at least on the candidates

I know anything about. (Examples - Gore has no position or in the middle on civil liberties - Did someone who looked like him give that speech. )

They completely mistake Kerry's position on war - listing him as a hawk. It's not the IWR, because they have Edwards as a Dove. (In reality, Edwards was the most hawkish of the 2004 Democrats - he was for the war even in late 2003. From their own comments, Edwards may well have gone to war if he was President (though he now agrees it was wrong) - it was not just WMD per interviews in 2003. Kerry in early 2004 publicly called for Bush not to go to war and (even before it was known the war was a disaster) said that he would not have gone to war. It is insane to look over Kerry's 35+ years in the public eye and label him a hawk. I'm not sure who would disagree more the RW (who think hawk is good) or Kerry's friends and family.

I think the quiz may actually use them better than the chart suggests. For example, I came out 100% Kerry - which is actually pretty true. I was very pleasantly surprised reading more about him in 2004, as I didn't know many of his positions in 2003. In this case, I took neither on the war question - as both alternatives were written in a too extreme way. So, they likely but both "oppose" and "approve" in the default neither, placing only the "strongly" wording for the 2 other answers.

But the table likely needs to be fixed - I only scanned part of Kerry and Gore. Then looked across at the others on the 2 war ones - I used Edwards as an example, not to pick on him -but because I had looked at his positions in 2003/2004.

I agree with Kerry being my favorite - I never considered either Kuchinich (who does share some of Kerry's positions - but they are very different). The things I dislike about Biden apparently weren't given enough weight.

I do agree that number 25 and 24 are pretty bottom of the barrel

Overall, I guess it's not that bad. 4,5 and 6 were Feingold, Gore and Clark - all of whom i would prefer to 2 and 3

That said - there are tons of errors in the table they use. Examples:
1) Gore - has an "unknown view" for decreasing civil liberties - I kind of remember a landmark speech there.

2) Kerry - has supports premptive war (which he definitely doesn't), and that he is Hawkish (which might surprise both the RW and his wife)- quick to start a war. I would say this was a misunderstanding of the IWR - but they have Edwards as the opposite. From interviews in 2004, Edwards was far more hawkish and was for the was through at least most of 2003. Kerry spoke out before it. Also, Kerry has a very long history - from all his statements going back to college he deserves the label he was once given of "tough dove". It's clear from Kerry's statements in March 2003 that he would not have gone to war. Edwards might have - as he said on Hardball in late 2003 that he was for it for reasons other than WMD.

How I'd rate them.

1. Russ Feingold is #1 and right now he's my first choice.

2. Gore is down in the survey as strongly pro free trade (I wonder if he's modified these views lately)and I think it's been a disaster. Gets a boost from me on experience bringing him up to #2. If he moderates that Free trade position, he's my #1.

3. Kerry's been a much stronger critic of the war lately. I supported him in 04 and would be happy to support him again but he's not my first choice. I'd love to think he's learned alot from his mistakes and has a fire that he didn't show in 04 but who knows.

4. Richardson: I like the idea of the Democrats nominating a westerner. He's got the foreign policy credentials. His being Hispanic who's tough on immigration is a plus. Claiming he was a top prospect for a major league baseball team when he really wasn't is a minus. He could go up or down depending on his foreign policy views.

5. Wes Clark has the security and foreign policy credentials--lacks political experience. If he comes out of the gate more polished than last time he could move up.

6. I like John Edwards a great deal but my criticism of him is the same as in 2004--Lack of experience.

7. If agreeing with the guy on the issues were the only thing that mattered Kucinich would be my #1.

Too many questions asking the same thing about the war. Separate categories for former v. current members of congress is too specific to make it a useful question. What's the point of asking if someone has run before? No one is going to answer that unless they have a specific choice in mind. Bad question.

119. The problem with this quiz,

Is that as far as I can tell it doesn't take into account electability. It's a good way of telling which politician shares most of your views, but not of telling which politician is most likely to be able to advance them.

I'd far rather support a politician I agreed with 75% of the time but who was likely to win than one I agreed with 90% of the time but wasn't.

This is why I have reservations about Feingold, who the quiz suggested I support, for example - I think he'd make an excellent president, but I'm not convinced he'd make a good presidential candidate.

127. The quiz is suspect

1- It didn't give option of potential candidate having been a VP or having military experience like Eisenhower.

2- Neither option for Social Security is best when it included privatization for one and raising retirement age in the other. If it had been Consider other options but not privatization I might had considered that as my answer.

3- I had a problem with the Death Penalty question. I probably would support the death penalty but I would want to make sure that they are guilty and the punishment fits the crime. I just don't trust juries (people) to make the decision as to who is guilty when too many times the police, the prosecutors and the court system is rigged.

4- How can they include someone like Rice who probably hasn't had her views known?

Based on the quiz results I received I would then have to strip out all Senators & Reps and Rice because Senators & Reps have never won as President. I don't recall if a Mayor has won without being VP or Gov or Military Hero.

The only way I see a Senator winning election is if the opponent is also a Senator. (Unless the Republicans screw themselves really bad and the voters refuse to vote for them.)
