U.S. Program Is Directed at Altering Iran's Politics

As the Bush administration confronts the Tehran government over its suspected nuclear weapons program and accusations that it supports terrorism, a newly created office of Iranian affairs in the State Department is poring over applications for a rapidly expanding program to change the political process inside Iran.

The project, which will spend $7 million in the current fiscal year, would become many times larger next year if Congress approves a broad request for $85 million that the Bush administration has requested for scholarships, exchange programs, radio and television broadcasts and other activities aimed at shaking up Iran's political system.

The effort, overseen by Elizabeth Cheney, a deputy assistant secretary of state who is a daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, has been denounced by Iran's leaders as meddling in their internal affairs.

where did Elizabeth learn how to alter other countries politics? (school of the americas?) or is lizzy just in charge of the money?

6. Great she did such a good job in Iraq.
When Gen. Turner (the first post leader in Iraq) told Wolfowitz that he needed
people with real talent to help rebuild Iraq ..... In other words not Liz Cheney and a bunch of
"kids" from the Heritage Institute he was fired and replaced with Bremer.

7. Elizabeth Cheney is no moron.
She has a law degree. (I've been following this story.) Here's what I've found out: She already has $85 million, not $7 million. The original amount was $10 million, and Bush last month went to congress to get "$75 million in Emergency funding" to install "democracy" in Iran.

Liz Cheney is now in charge of the money.

So far, we've heard from a few groups she's contacted. One of them said, "Take your money and Shove it". This group felt that Cheney has no business trying to "buy democracy" in Iran. I've heard there are 2 other groups saying the same thing: Get Lost.

Now, here's the interesting part: Cheney has contacted the former Shah of Iran's son. (remember the puppet dictator we installed in the 70's? They kicked him out and had a revolution). Reza Pahlavi sounds interested!!! YAY We got one!!! They supposedly told him he could be the """New Shah""" (complete with a Peacock Throne).

My take on the whole thing: Cheney is probably a naïve, spoiled woman who's grown up with servants. She's used to the soft life. She is no match for these rebel groups & hard-liners. They will take her money, but they will double-cross her.

Money doesn't buy everything, Liz.

8. She's attractive and as corrupt and evil as DADDY!
That makes her ultra-dangerous to anyone who loves their constitutional freedoms. She's part of the PNAC, World Empire cabal.

12. What you report here jives completely
with some of the info contained in these threads:

Thanks for the info. Can you elaborate on who "we" is as far as your statement here: "... we've heard from a few groups she's contacted." Are you doing some journalistic investigative work? I'm very interested in this subject -- as it relates to neocons efforts for regime change in Iran, who they are aligned with, etc. Been trying to follow it for some time now. And also, who are the other groups that said "take your money and shove it"? Thanks again!

15. Emit - here's some more info -
Edited on Sun Apr-16-06 03:49 PM by cliss
Here's what I've got:

1) "we" here is Liz Cheney's group. She's the Deputy Assistant to the Secretary of State, and she has a group of underlings. They apparently go with her on trips. She was reportedly seen in Dubai, purportedly meeting with Reza Pahlavi.

2) "The groups she's contacted" - one of them in the Center for Human Rights Defenders, headed by Mohamad Ali Dadkhah. He's the one that told her to "shove it". There are about 20 or so groups that were contacted by her. Also other single individuals, like writers, influential Iranians and so on. Apparently, they have not shown any interest in her money. (maybe she was too blatant about it?)

3) "other groups who told her to shove it" - I'm trying to find links, nothing is coming up. Will keep trying, though. Should I start a separate thread, or PM?

4) "investigative journalism" = no, I'm not doing an article on her. I'm a writer, but not of this genre. (wouldn't that be a great one, though?)

This is an interesting story and like you, I'm following it. There's not a lot of information out there. I read a lot of European online newspapers, and that's where I get most of my information. Like the story that she contacted the Shah's son....amazing, my jaw dropped.

16. Thank you
and yes, I think this does warrant its own thread. I started to follow the neocons' (i.e., Ledeen, Perle, etc.) associations with the Shah's son, MEK, etc. as well as their creation of some of these Iran democracy groups some time back, when following some of the great threads about Ledeen's involvement in the Niger forgeries. While I was aware of Cheney's daughter's new assignment, until you posted this, I hadn't connected her specifically with this other effort that I've been trying to unravel. I think it's all connected. I've even added myself to one of the Iranian Reza Shah II groups just to see what kind of information and news they are following, as well as reading some other similar groups, like a liberal hawks' website, etc. that religiously follow Ledeen (and of course, reading his op-eds and those of other neocons'), all just to see what they have in store for regime change.

17. Also
and it may have little significance, but Reza Pahlavi II lives in the US -- Virginia. Do you recall why they were meeting in Dubai?

Couple of pieces on Pahlavi here:
http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache:kXPP9HBmzzEJ:www.ufppc.org/content/view/4172/2/+Reza+Pahlavi+lives+in&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=1

and another article here pointing out why Pahlavi isn't a good choice:

~snip~
In the case of Iran, one day some US analysts think of Reza Pahlavi as the post-IRI Iran, but when they see Iranians have no interest in the return of monarchy, they suddenly doubt the Iranian pro-Democracy movement for ending the Islamic Republic. Another day, they think of MKO cult, or the Aliyev's puppet Chehregani, as forces to unite with, to make a military attack on Iran, and when they hear that Iranians consider MKO a dead Islamist cult, and that Iranians consider Chehregani as a puppet of Azerbaijan's president Aliyev, and moreover Iranians do not support any US military attack on Iran, again they suddenly doubt Iranians' pro-Democracy movement to replace IRI with a secular republic, and suddenly they go back to the so-called "reformist" Khatami, who was not even a Gorbachev for Iran.

18. Just read the entire NYT piece
(Don't have a paid subscription so couldn't read at the link in the OP)

Here's more, although you probably already know this info. Confirms what you have written -- I'll post anyway for others to read:

One Asian diplomat said the effort was reminiscent of the subsidies the United States provided to Iraqi exile groups in the 1990's. "They don't call it 'regime change,' but that is obviously what it is," he said. But he had to be promised anonymity before he would discuss it, not wanting to create a public rift between his country and the United States on a significant matter of foreign policy.

To find people to promote change in Iran, the State Department has opened a competition for grant applications. A Web site announcement says that applicants "must outline activities linked to reform and demonstrate how the proposed approach would achieve sustainable impact in Iran."

A State Department official said that numerous applications had come in and that the department would have little trouble spending the $25 million in the next year. But he acknowledged that various groups were squabbling over how best to promote reform and who would be most effective in doing so.

~snip~

Other experts said that some of the people who were stepping forward might not be the best ones to get the money.

~snip~

Administration officials said a few top American officials had been traveling the country, particularly to Los Angeles, to meet with Iranian exile organizations, many of them supporters of the monarchy of Shah Reza Pahlavi, who was overthrown in 1979. Some of the Los Angeles groups operate satellite radio and television stations that beam programs into Iran.

13. Um-m-m
I find it odd that she goes by her maiden name not her married name. Does that mean she is just so proud of the name Cheney that she can't give it up? And I don't think Liz is attractive.
