Fox's Hannity Stays the Course With Bush

PDF | Email
By DAVID BAUDER, The Associated Press
Apr 16, 2006 12:26 PM (1 hr 11 mins ago)

NEW YORK - Sean Hannity will not abandon ship. President Bush's approval ratings have sunk into the 30s, but Fox News Channel's tenacious conservative isn't wavering in his support, even while parting ways with the president over immigration and the Dubai ports deal.

"Let me be straight with you - I like George Bush," Hannity said. "I think he's a man of principle, a man of faith. I think he's got a backbone of steel and he's a real, genuine, big-time leader ... He's a consequential figure for his time. We don't see it right now."

History will vindicate Bush as a strong leader the same way it did Harry Truman, another unpopular president of his time, Hannity said.

Even surf-by viewers of "Hannity & Colmes" will recognize those opinions. The popularity of the weeknight talk show and his syndicated talk-radio show has enabled the 44-year-old Long Island native to become a business unto himself - hawking books, recommending CDs and arranging dates for like-minded singles.

1. Well, he's right about one thing:
this presidency has been consequential...to the detriment of the entire free world, and from the likes of which we may never recover.

14. Hannity doesn't bother looking at the racing form or being
objective. Hannity is trying to make you believe the mule is a race horse.

6. Hannity is and always will be
a shill for Bush. I nearly collapsed with laughter when he said he was an Independent.

Independent my ass. He's one of the biggest GOP toadies around.

I wish the GOP would stop speculating and spinning how great history will judge Bush. That's BS. How about doing something about NOW??

7. Of course he does.
He's getting paid his minimum wage salary to tout the wonders of everything bush says and does. Not bad for a schmuck who didn't finish high school let alone college. I just have to wonder how cushy a life must be when you've got your snout in the rwing $$$ trough. I mean there's no hard physical labor involved; certainly no intellectual thought required. You show up, spout some canned talking points for the masses and rub elbows with the money-changers who put you there. Tough life. You'd have to be a football bowl scout to have a job that cush.

18. are you sure about him not finishing high school
I remember him bashing the faculty at NYU - sounded like he could not make the grade there - and tried to put it off onto "liberal" elite who were just punishing him as a conservative

23. later in the article he says he is not 100% bushbot ...
Hannity and his peers are "in this double tug, being squeezed in different ways," he said. "Do I stick with the guy I love or do I back the policies that fit into my world view? And I guess he's done the only thing he could do, which is uncomfortably express his opposition in those areas in which Bush has disappointed him."

Hannity has criticized the Dubai ports deal for being a threat to national security. During the debate on immigration, he takes a much tougher line than the president on illegal workers and in seeking more secure borders.

While this may upset the president's supporters and some of Hannity's fans, Henican believes Hannity gains wider credibility by exhibiting something other than unquestioned support for Bush.

"I say these things every day," Hannity said. "Liberal critics don't hear me say it."

Well done Sean, you can't be a bushbot because you think Bush isn't racist or xenophobic enough.

8. It speaks volumes that he has to defend his love for Bush
If Bush really were a "real, genuine, big-time leader" it would be obvious enough to not have to be defended.

19. He's Gotta Go Down With The Ship
Insannity along with the other hate asshats don't care about popularity numbers...if anything those low numbers play into the constant "persecution complex" these goons claim exist.

They're not about integrity...they're into two things...Power and Money. Even at 30% or 20% or even 5% there are enough bigots, mysognists, homophobes, fundies and other wingnuts out there to sell books, fill auditoriums and pull in radio ratings (no matter how meager they are) and revenue. Integrity? Why bother now...

Gotta give the Repugnicans credit...when they crank up their propaganda machine, their mighty Wurlitzer and sing to their echo chamber, it's still highly effective and Democrats still haven't figured out how to either defuse it or minimalize it.

20. Send Him, Send His Kids
Edited on Mon Apr-17-06 07:16 AM by erpowers
Since he seems to want to stay the course I say send him into the war along with his kids. I get very upset when these Republicans and Young Republicans who want to call everyone who is against the war a communist or unpatriotic or say we should stay the course but then when they are asked to go or to send their kids they say "oh no, do not send my kids send those other kids". I have seen and heard about many Bush supporters who claimed to support the war in Iraq and Bush's handling of the war but then turn on both Bush and the war when their kids are put in jeopardy of being sent to the war. At least two parents have been highlighted for doing this which is why at time I wonder why the media will not do more stories on how many Bush supporters turn on the war when they think their kids may have to go fight the war. During the 2004 campaign NBC Nightly News interviewed one women who claimed she supported Bush and supported the war in Iraq; she claimed she thought it was the right thing to do. She also pointed out that she planned on voting for Bush; however, she went on the say that if Bush called for a draft she would vote for Kerry in that she did not want her sons fighting the war. The other person was also a women who when a Marine recruiter came to her house to recruit her son the recruiter saw an American flag waving from the a flag pole. I think He then saw support the troops bumpers stickers on the family vehicle. When the mother opened the door she had on a support the troops shirt and greeted the Marine recruiter by saying I want you to know that I support you and all the other troops. However, when the recruiter began to talk about recruiting her son she told the recruiter something like "oh no, our type do not do things like that". Finally, although the support for the war has weakened I contend pollsters should ask people who support the war if they support sending their children to the war. I think adding that question to the polls which claimed major support for the war would have made for interesting discussions. It would have been interesting to see polls that claimed 70% support for the war and 90%-100% against their kids fighting the war.
