New Orleans Mayoral Debate on MSNBC tonight

Co-hosted by Chris Matthews. Seven candidates will be on and there will be another host so I doubt there will be much discussion. I'll assume Matthews will let someone besides himself talk. The show is on at eight central time.

So far more than 10,000 people have voted. The election is this coming Saturday. The local pundits predict there will be a runoff between Mayor Nagin and one other candidate. Frontrunners, LT Governor Mitch Landrieu, local businessman Ron Forman.

2. Matthews planted the seed for the GOP last week

8. He'll cream Nagin just like Russert did here in Mass

when he moderated our Gubernatorial debate and helped kill Dem Shannon O'Brien. Russert did the same down in Florida when Jeb was up last time.


Why Nagin agreed to this is a mystery. I guess he couldn't turn down the big stage. He'll regret it.

3. This sort of pisses me off. . .

. . .don't get me wrong I like the sunshine aspect of this, however this is a local race and so many people outside of New Orleans (and Lousiana for that matter) who have no clue about the issues in New Orleans, above and beyond Katrina, are going to be taking sides in this race when they don't know what is going on.

4. I think the concept

is to have a national broadcast that could be seen by New Orleans residents who are not living in the city now. Also, the local NBC affiliate, a perennial second place TV station is working their butts off to get viewers. Their anchorman will be the other co-host.

And you are right, many may be taking sides (like me,) but they(we) can't vote.

6. More importantly. . .

...most of us outside of N.O. do not know anything about what is going on on the ground and we really don't know much about the issues outside of Katrina. It does make sense to broadcast this nationally because the of the displaced residents who will be voting, however I hope all of the pundits who chime in are local for they have a much better grasp of what is going on. Other than moderating, Matthews should keep his mouth shut. Will Doug Brinkley be involved? At least he is local.

7. Yep, that is the whole idea--but isn't there a national newscaster who

at least has some connection with the region??? ANYONE??? Someone credible, who knows the area? Why Tweety?

He was interviewed this morning on MSNBC minus his makeup. Jesus, talk about rode hard and put away wet--he easily looked a decade or MORE older than he normally does. It looked as though he uses those neck lift clips, and he left his at home!!! Either that, or he's rotting from the inside, and it's starting to show....

10. I thought that everybody on network or cable news

knew everything about everything. Susan Roesgen on CNN spent a long time in New Orleans TV as did NBC's Hoda Kotb.
