They will be considering the primary changes. I thought this was to be decided in the fall.

Michigan Democratic Chairman Mark Brewer said he'd like Michigan to be one of states allowed to hold caucuses right after Iowa's first-in-the-nation caucuses.

"Our preference is to be on that Saturday between Iowa and New Hampshire," he said Friday.

Next Thursday, Brewer and representatives from some other states will be in New Orleans to tell the committee why they should be one of the early states. If they get national committee approval, Michigan Democrats could choose their 2008 presidential favorite in mid-January.

Fourteen percent of the state's population is black and 22 percent is minority. Michigan also has the largest Arab-American population in the country. The application notes that 21 percent of the state's work force is unionized and that Michigan is a pivotal swing state that has gone Democratic in the last four presidential elections.

Et Tu, Michigan?

Michigan's Democratic leaders, including Sen. Carl Levin, have long wanted to roll back the influence of Iowa and New Hampshire on the Democratic presidential nominee selection process. It was at their urging that then DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe empaneled a primary calendar commission in 2005. Michigan had threatened to schedule its primary on the same day as New Hampshire's.

According to several members of the national committee and the commission, Michigan delegates insisted that they did not intend for the process to endorse any particular state to supplant Iowa or NH.

Reacting today on her way to New Orleans, New Hampshire Democratic Party Chair Kathy Sullivan would only say: "I thought this wasn't supposed to be about Michigan?"

Ok, I found this sentence...about the fall.

"The Rules and Bylaws Committee will by the fall recommend a specific calendar for approval by the full Democratic National Committee."
