Sen. Lugar bucks Bush. Talking to Iran is essential
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 09:37 AM by killerbush
Sen. Richard Lugar, (R-IN) has told President Bush that striking Iran is not an option to explore right now, and urges high level talks between the two countries to see if some sort of diplomatic solution can be reached.

He said "I believe we ought to cool it when it comes to possible use of force against Iran. We need to make more headway diplomatically". He said we ought to hold off on sanctions until they can be proven to be effective.

But Nicholas Burns, the number 3 man at the State Dept. says if Iran continues on its path of no return, it will find itself "in a box", and in a position it doesn't want ot be in.

The drums of war are beating again!!!

1. Seek diplomatic solutions till the cows come home
Unfortunately there is no one bush has surrounded himself with that has any diplomatic skills. Lugar is right every once in awhile. "Conservatives" are idiots all the time.

3. Lugar has no Democratic challenger for his re-election bid in the fall,
which is a shame.

At the same time, any voice that helps dissuade the Bush administration from another violent "solution" to conflict in the Middle East is helpful.

On rare occasions, Lugar's voice is a stay against bad government. He spoke up clearly against Reagan on Marcos in the Phillippines and on apartheid in S. Africa.

He's no slouch on foreign relations.

I wonder if anybody at the White House is paying attention.

7. Agree strongly that "paying attention" isn't their long suit over there.
Lugar might carry more weight than the Democrats, though, because he's earned his keep in the party and chairs the Foreign Relations Committee.

But I definitely am worried.
