How do you determine whether to post in GD or GDP?
In other words, "General Discussion" or "General Discussion Politics?" I post in both, do you?

1. Use the force, and only post in one forum....
If it is political, use GDP otherwise GD!

(sorry, just had to state the obvious!)

:hi:

2. Except that most of the posts in GD are political too
I've also wondered what the difference was

8. Of course, I am no authority...
If a post is political, it is subject matter that greatly divides peoples opinions - or, of pertaining to the politics of a country.

A general discussion is of what tractor best performs in the field.

A general discussion politics discusses on how best to implement health care or the need thereof.

for example...

4. IMHO, there's more reasoned debate in GD/P.
Also, a lot of GD is not related to politics, more to culture at large.

Anyway, if I wnat to rant, I post in GD.

UIf I want to inspire some thought, I put it in GD/P.

I remember why the split occurred; for those who don't, just take my word--it had to be!

6. I almost never post in GDP, unless it's specifically about a campaign,
or if I'm spamming DU with dupes of a story I'm trying to draw attention to.

GDP does make a great spare forum, when something special comes up.

7. GD moves so fast, you can only do topics that are right THEN
Edited on Tue Apr-18-06 11:41 PM by Neil Lisst
GDP, you can count on being able to discuss the topic at a more leisurely pace. GD threads go to page 2 in less than an hour at times.

GD is fast moving water. GDP, slow moving water.

11. Yes, I am definitely well aware of that difference.
Sometimes, if I want a particular thread to get a lot of attention, I will try posting in GD and hope it doesn't get buried in the first 5 minutes. On the other hand, GDP pretty much assures it won't get buried for awhile.

10. There Is No Clear Line, Sir
The differences are more owing to past events than anything else. This forum is what remains of the old Primary forum from '04, which was set up because the "primary wars" were completely over-running General Discusssion, and were bitter enough to require focused supervision. It was maintained as a forum for discussion of campaign events that year, and after the election, proved popular enough that it was maintained: a group of members has sort of calved off from the other forum and were used to the place, and to each other.

Like most forums here, it has its own culture, so to speak, and local mores and styles differing somewhat from other forums on Democratic Underground. People here tend to be either very committed to a single candidate or to an over-riding political attitude. Most on both sides are pretty tough-minded as disputants, and prefer to rely on their own verbal mettle when argument grows heated. Many are quite knowledgeable about the workings of campaigns, and attuned to the horse-race aspects of politics.

13. I post in both also!
I put political posts in GDP, and non-political posts in GD! Isn't that what everyone else does?
