McClellan Became Face of a Troubled Term

WASHINGTON -- Press secretary Scott McClellan is one of the longest serving of the band of loyalists President Bush brought from Texas. Now, McClellan reflected wistfully as he stood alongside Bush outside the White House and contemplated going home, "I've given it my all, sir."
McClellan, 38, announced his resignation on Wednesday as part of a shake-up of Bush's senior aides. With 2 1/2 years to go in Bush's second term, the parting clearly was bittersweet for McClellan, who has been with Bush since he was Texas governor. "Change can be helpful," said McClellan, his voice wavering with emotion.
Later, he told reporters aboard Air Force One on a day trip to Alabama, "I've been at this a long time. I didn't need much encouragement to make this decision."
McClellan, through his daily on-camera briefings, has become the face of the Bush White House. Increasingly, as Bush's poll ratings plummet and the war in Iraq drags on, that face has become more opaque and troubled, the briefings more contentious. Fending off reporters who often seem determined to drive him off message, McClellan has become the
butt of late-night TV comics and liberal Internet blogs for his endless repeating of set phrases and talking points and sometimes mangled sentences.
