Michael Douglas to Headline Kucinich Cleveland Event
Supports Ohio Congressman's Work for World Peace

CLEVELAND, (April 18) - - Academy Award Winning Actor Michael Douglas will travel to Cleveland on Sunday, April 23, to support the reelection bid of U.S. Representative Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH).

"As a United Nations Messenger of Peace, I am pleased to come to Cleveland to strongly support Dennis Kucinich's efforts for world peace. He and I share many of the same concerns about what concrete steps must be taken to make this a more peaceful world, beginning with the urgent need for nuclear non-proliferation. Long before others Dennis warned America not to go to war against Iraq. He is now trying to head off a war with Iran. He is an important leader for peace and a true visionary. He deserves support and I am proud to be in Cleveland to provide it," said Douglas.

Two weeks ago, Douglas was at the UN to honor Kofi Annan's efforts to ban landmines. Douglas works internationally for the control of small arms.

Kucinich led the effort in the House of Representatives in challenging the Administration's march toward war in Iraq. He organized 125 Democrats in voting against the war. An analysis he did in October of 2002 of the Administration's claims regarding Iraq proved prescient as he was the first member of Congress to categorically debunk the case for war. He later was instrumental in forming a bipartisan coalition supporting legislation, House Joint Resolution 55, to withdraw US troops from Iraq.

Kucinich forced hearings on nearly $9 billion missing in Iraq reconstruction funds. Kucinich recently used a rare parliamentary maneuver to cause debate about the Adminstration's private Iraq propaganda machine. He is currently leading the way in raising questions about the reported presence of US armed forces in Iran and US alleged financial support for anti-Iranian insurgents. He is also the author of legislation to create a cabinet-level Department of Peace and Non-Violence, which seeks to make non-violence an organizing principle in US society and to avert war through international cooperation. The bill has 63 co-sponsors in the US House and has been introduced in the US Senate. A version of it has been introduced in the House of Commons in Great Britain. Kucinich has long been a leading proponent of full US participation in the Biological Weapons Convention, the Chemical Weapons Convention, the Landmine Treaty, the Small Arms Treaty, the International Criminal Court and the Kyoto Climate Change Treaty. He tried to block Adminstration efforts to withdraw from the ABM Treaty. In 2002 his work for peace was recognized with the Gandhi Peace Award.

The Sunday event will take place at the IX Center, near Cleveland's International Airport. Information on tickets and admission can be found at http://www.kucinich.us. To purchase a ticket online visit http://store.kucinich.us.

The program, featuring Michael Douglas, will begin at 5pm.

1. Why did Kucinich throw his support behind Edwards in Iowa rather than anti
war candidate Howard Dean? I have no use for him since then.

3. In Iowa, if a candidate had less than 15% at a caucus location,
the supporters then moved to a second choice (if they wanted to). Kuchinich ased his supporters to go to Edwards - which seemed odd to me at the time as Edwards was openly hawkish at least in late 2003. Either Dean, who was running as anti-war or Kerry, who spoke against going to war before it started would seem more likely choices.

- If he thought he had a shot, maybe he felt Edwards was the least threat to him in the next step. (A huge Dean victory would eliminate his reason to run as was Kerry to some degree.)

- Is Kuchinich closer to Edwards on the non-war issues?
