gas prices? Looks like there could be a relationship. What I'm worried about is * getting the oil companies to lower their prices. If that happens - that could do a lot to up *'s poll numbers.

If that's true, then Americans care more about the cost of a gallon of gas than they do freedom and dead soldiers.

9. When 'A' correlates with 'B' neither may be the cause of the other.

They may have a common cause. In this case, I think the price of a gallon of gas tracks against the perceived stability of the world market. If shortages are foreseen, the price goes up. The noise about Iran certainly affects the oil market.

So, if either can be regarded as the 'cause' then it may well be that disapproval of Bush (or any pResident) indirectly causes the price of gas to rise.

10. John Cleese of Monty Python had it down.

Not just a comedian, he was active in politics, doing "party political broadcasts" for the Social Democratic Party in the UK (a wanna-be third party). And he said that what voters care about most is "the price of fish". Meaning, big issues don't bother people--it's just what affects them personally. Sad, but true.

Although it looks like his popularity dictates gas price, not the other way around. That's our oil-man pResident for ya.

6. I hardly think his approval is linked to gas prices.

Price at the pump is going to go up...and Buxh's #s are going to go down.

I think his rating is tied to a collection of bad press related to issues familiar to us all, including newly confirmed lies leading up to the war that appears to have no "victory" and no end. Not as many war fans these days now that we're broke.

Says so right on the chart.

Bush's numbers go up, gas goes down. Plotting a reciprocal (the opposite) of the price shows the relationship.

In general, W's numbers go down when things are going especially to hell in Iraq or when refineries are getting crushed by hurricanes in the gulf. Both of these also drive up gas prices.

Polls don't drive gas prices. Gas prices don't drive polls (much). Neither markets nor presidential polls like instability.

He's been so damnably awful in so many ways that there would have to be MUCH MORE THAN JUST A DIVE IN THE PRICE OF FUEL to help this idiot. Especially, since the revelation of what we on the left have always known. That Bush himself was behind the leak of Valerie Plame's name and assignment for political gain.
