Lawmaker Puzzled by Obscenity in Letter

WASHINGTON - Nobody expects to get a letter from a member of Congress that ends with an expletive.

But that's what happened when Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (news, bio, voting record), R-Mo., recently corresponded with a resident of her southeast Missouri district.

The letter ended with a profane, seven-letter insult beginning with the letter a — "i think you're an. ..."

...
Connor said that Emerson personally signed the letter, dated Feb. 15. She included a handwritten personal message at the bottom: "PS - please forgive the delay in responding."

I guess neither reading nor proofreading are fundamental with the GOP!!!

The actual letter can be found here (PDF): http://wid.ap.org/interactives/emerson.pdf

3. this is funny...but that's all.
some low level flunky will lose his or her job over this, but no egg on face for congresswoman. I will repeat our favorite mantra, which I believe to be true:

"Now, if it were a Democrat..."

4. Let's all email her the word back
nothing else - use different subject lines, but everyone's text will just say "asshole". That would send her a message that we are listening.

9. Sure, she is probably telling the truth when she says she has no
idea how it got there...but my guess is that some pissed-off staffer who had to work late researching the response took a little revenge. Easy to do, if you just run the copy back through the printer with the added phrase at the bottom of the page, and the rest of the text cut out...!

By the quality of their staff we shall know them. And that goes for the Dunce in Chief, too.

11. also, that last sentence could have been typed AFTER Rep. Emerson
signed it and P.S.d it.

That last sentence appears to have been typed in haste, as there looks like 3 spaces instead of the usual 2 between sentences; and it starts with a small "i" instead of a capital "I".

Something about this doesn't pass the smell test.

Or rather, the article doesn't state that.

Emerson says she can't explain how the offensive language made it into the letter, which otherwise reads like a typical response to a citizen's question about last year's testimony of oil executives before the Senate Commerce Committee.

"There is no excuse for this inappropriate letter having been sent, and every apology has been made to the individual who received it," Emerson said in a statement to The Associated Press.

"We cannot determine whether the addition to the letter was made by someone within the office or by someone with access to the office, but it is on my letterhead and the responsibility for it lies with me. A valuable lesson has been learned and new procedures will be adopted as a result."

It's still noteworthy.

8. Reminds me
of the old "bedbug letter" story. A passenger on a railroad sleeper car was bitten by bedbugs, and wrote the company to complain. He received back a letter signed by the president of the company, claiming that they had never had bedbugs in their sleeper cars before and that due to his experience they would now be especially diligent in cleaning them out and please accept our most sincere apologies etc. And the passenger was impressed until he noticed that, clipped to this letter, was his own original letter, with this sentence scrawled across the bottom: "Send this bastard the bedbug letter!"
